while you're at it check their Aphex Twin - "7.7 Mixes For

well it certainly isnt their best album.. I dont think it's
a 6.2 though

shit, maybe he's right. Maybe I've been fooled into
believing autechre were great, when in reality they are
washed out?

nah... autechre are the kings of IDM

Most hilarious is what he does to millionaire simp Trent
Reznor. Paid absurd amounts in an attempt to remix Nine Inch
Nails and soup up his stuff with that Aphex action, James
leaves the odious source tapes unheard on "The Beauty of
Being Numb Section B", opting for something equally
obnoxious. Meandering on the keyboards for the first half of
the song, he then decides to blow through a straw
uninterestedly and cut up some wide-mouthed yawns for the
remainder. Not exactly a great track, but apropos for the
wretched artist in question. "At the Heart of It All" is
similarly lethargic and half-assed, sounding like he slowed
"Ventolin" down to 16 RPM and then poured on some slowly
heaving, molasses-thick brass.

I even think that it's a quite good review considering it's
from Pitchfork... No insult, no xenophobic comment, a bit of
objectivity...

sometimes I wish people would review albums soley on the
music. forget about the cultural importance, and where it
fits in with the scene and where it is evolving to. just lie
back and let the beats of Xylin Room pummel into your
brain.
Im not talking about the Draft review or Pitchfork, just in
general

It's mostly different. And who likes what best depends on
tastes. I can't tell you what I like best.

If you put on Draft, Gantz of Confield in your record player
right after incunabula you can hardly imagine it's the same
2 persons who made this.

now, now... one mustn't be too critical of pitchfork... they
are one of the most viable critical sources out there... and
although they've fucked up a lot of warp reviews lately,
this one included, in a lot of cases i can understand how
they give out the ratings they do... i know that many people
here would've given Draft a much lower score than Leone gave
it... i have to say though, Leone is quickly becoming one of
my least favourite reviewers on the site... she, and a lot
of the "rock" critics, have this ridiculous double standard
where they expect particular electronic artists to reinvent
the fucking wheel every time around, while they think it's
cool that the vast majority of rock bands have done anything
new in years... i don't trust their electronic reviews
unless they're in the hands of Mark Martelli, or Mark
Richardson... and Andy Beta's okay...

I do believe Pitchfork gave confield an 8.8 though, that's
good...

anyways, my only beef with reviews is that it's only the
reviewers opinions, yet they state them as if it's the way
things are... for instance, he said Draft 7.30 is
uninspiring music or something... to him maybe, to me it
sounds great and all that... I feel I'm open with my
opinions about music here, but I always try to make it clear
that it's just my opinion... I hate that about music
reviews, how they seem to think their own opinion is the one
that matters...

Leone clearly misses the point of recent autechre... i can't
understand why she was assigned it in the first place... the
way she talks about Confield... i really pity her lack of
perception

But surely all reviews are opinions, non? They don't need to
write "but that's just my opinion" all the time, I kind of
take that as read! :-)

I think the complete opposite. I think they've really shown
who they are and the artistry they possess w/ their newer

the confield era

why do you really care what Joyrex thinks... are you
incapable of independent thought?

Old AE is not all that amazing (some of it). Incunabula as
is really cheesey, for example.

Interesting that she only got as far as surripere. Didn't
give it much of a chance. I mean it's not obvious music.

You can never "get" autechre by listening to it once and
concentrating. You have to listen ten times without paying
attention, then the eleventh time or twentieth time maybe
you look at a coffee cup with a weird colorful pattern of
cats holding umbrellas and that is the dust-seed around
which the track's logic crystallizes. And then it's so
beautiful it takes your breath away.

I think I got some more of draft 7.30 this morning. Not all
of it mind you. There will be many other mornings with other
coffee cups.
