My neighbour knows someone....blah blah who gets hold of
new films on pirate DVD right? I borrowed a disk this
evening to see the quality, and it had two films
on...Treasure Planet, and some Nickelodean crappy
film......anyway thats besides the point....the quality of
Treasure Planet is 100% stunning and surround sound as
well....

Now my neighbour says his mate's mate downloads the
films........is this possible at that kinda quality? I've
downloaded films with Kazaa, but they have all been ropey
'classic' pirate copy quality.

Anyone know?

i'm aware

Maybe Treasure Planet is already available on DVD in the US,
and this is just copied onto another disk, with another
film....I don't know...

You can say what you wanna say, but the animation is
amazing.

the format is probably divx or xvid, which is like mp3, but
for dvd's instead.. it's a matter of compressing.. yeah..

There's so many fucking things wrong with the film i don't
even want to start. I can just imagine all these speccy
fucking geeks in some room together "brainstorming".

"Yeah, let's do Treasure Island, but listen to me, here's
the deal - it's in space! And there's robots and everything.
The kids will love it!"

It's fucking desperate marketing shit and I'm glad it
fucking bombed.

Was this a DVD or a CD?

I've made Super VCDs with quality approaching DVD, but you
can't fit a whole lot on a regular CD.

yeah divx and svcd can be pretty high quality, but as far as
i know you only get prologic surround rather than dolby
digital or dts surround

Of course it's possible! Either search for "screeners" or
get anything that is around 700mb. A dvd quality flick
running about 2hrs is roughly 730mb. You have to sort
through the shite - and if it won't preview the incomplete
file get DivFix or something similar.

Should we be talking about this? :)

The ones I've found aren't really close to DVD quality - I
guess some people don't know how to encode properly.

IW: i think it's a case of pawning off a DVD rip as "DVD
quality" cos most people don't notice the difference. they
think if it's on a big computer screen and it doesn't look
"fucked up" then it MUST be great quality (nevermind the
sound). as long as it gets the job done for them, more power
to these people, but this is why i don't fuck with movie
downloads unless the movie is extremely hard to find (eg:
eraserhead, un chien andalou), cos i'll notice the
difference.

you can get DVD quality movies that are still in theaters, i
know, i have ummteens.

there are in .vob format or .iso, which you burn to a dvd-r
or dvd+r

they have perfect dvd video quality, as well as 5.1 dolby
suround sound. some also included chapter breaks.

you can do AC3 encoding, which is 5.1 surround on a divx
movie (divx being a video codec, mpeg4 + mp3 sound)

so, if you have ne more quetsions let me know,

vob files are significantly bigger than divx avi's though
aren't they...

for most people a 700mb download is pretty huge, so i don't
fancy a 2gig vob!

Shit, I'm not spoiled. I grew up taping shit off tv and
watching it till there was snow, picture quality is always
in relation to availability. I have a fine copy of Half
Baked which you can't get over here. Got plenty of US dvds
too. But there's some movies I just feel no obligation
paying money to see in the cinema...

i'm not faulting people for downloading movies, hollywood is
the last institution that needs more money from the working
class. i'm just making a point that true DVD quality "rips"
are 99.9% non-existent as-of-yet.

i watch things on VHS tape rentals (mostly for free from the
school library) and HBO so i'm not a snob about dvd's or
nothin'. i just don't like having to use windows media
player to watch a movie, plus i like having more control
than just start, stop, pause. also i hate waiting in line to
download a movie. why wait 6 days for a film i could pay $2
to rent (or $0 if the school has it), or in some cases
$12-18 to buy (some movies i'm very happy to purchase, but
i'm not a "movie fan" per se).

Yeah sure. I basically despise going to the cinema so I just
watch films in the house... man I watch a depressing
amount of movies!

i really enjoy watching movies.. i'm different from a lot of
people in that i rarely watch things more than once (at
least not in a span of, say, 4 years) but i'm constantly
watching new things. i actually take a lot of
recommendations from this site.

in summer 2000 i started a list of movies i wanted to see.
originally it was around 50, now it's like 9 pages long
printed. crossed out are any movies i've seen NOT in
theaters that were on my list (since 2000).

titsworth,

i have well over 200+ divx rips - divx being the codec used
to ENCODE the movie from a DVD to a digital file on my
computer. DivX using mpeg4 video compression, and mp3 audio
compression.

I have 70+ dvd movies that I have copied in the past few
weeks. There is _NO_ audio or visual loss on these copies.
I even bought the cases and printed out the labels, so it
looks like a real copy, meh :)

You can now get DivX dvd-rips with 5.1 sound using AC3.

All my dvd-rips --> divx all look beautiful. But again,
700mb is a SMALL FILE for a movie of this quality. You
can't complain, but video can only be compressed so far.

For computer watching (nice 18'' LCD) you can't beat a divx
codec ripped dvd movie. But now that I got a nice tv/audio
setup, id much rather copy DVDs directely. And you cannot
playback / decode a DIVX movie rip, as dvd players dont have
the hardware or power to do that.

VCD/SVCDs are still mpeg2 and not as highly compressed, thus
dvd players can easily decode.

I can only confrim what "elusive" says: 5.1 surround IS
possible, as long as the soundtracks of the movie are
encoded with the ac3 codec. There is even a ac3 tool that
enables you to adjust the volume of the different channels
as you watch the movie - but since I don't have more than 2
speakers I don't really care if it supports 5.1 or not, I
only need it to hear the sound of movies that are encoded
with ac3. And also, ocasionally, to lower the volume of the
music score that often tends to be a little high for my
taste - I hate sudden, bomastic string things.
