AFX over hyped...

This has nothing to do with the quality of his music
because I think it is all top notch stuff (well most of
it)...what it is about is the way the media portray him as
THE pioneer of electronic music and styles...and yet if you
look at his changes in direction they often coincide with
his 'discovering' of lesser known artists. For example his
shift into the drill type stuff came after the early vibert,
mike p and tom j stuff, and now his new release is meant to
be Ragga techno type stuff which is what The Bug has just
released on Rephlex, however you can be sure the media will
praise Richard for once again redifining what electronic
music is.

As I say I love Aphex's music more than anything in the
world, but it also annoys me to see other artists not get
the praise they deserve.

As far as Ae go...they are good...although I am beginning to
tire of draft, which is something that has never happened to
me with an Ae release before. I hate to say it, but I think
I may be getting bored with electronic music... :(

if we play that card then we will go in a never ending
circle of people who influenced who, we'll just go farther
and farther back until we reach the first musician

the only point i was trying to make was that media
awareness/success should not be the benchmark for what a
pioneer is. There is an excellent line in a rap song about
pioneers but I can't think what it is at the moment. :D

offline mylittlesister from ...wherever (United Kingdom) on 2003-04-19 20:25 [#00659263]

i dont think ecnadniarb's is talking about influences, i
think he's actually talking about pioneers of specific new
genres or styles.

some small artist might have played a local venue, and some
other guy/band saw them, thort it was cool, made something
in the same style/genre, and became famous for it. Who's the
pioneer?

I think mr. afx just goes with the flow of things. He may
follow other peoples styles, but in my opinion, he does it
better. And Autechre can blow bubbles on my nutsack now,
but thats also just my opinion.

afx always makes it his own style anyway,

we all knew drill n bass and some knew ragga/techno, and
giving him the credit of pioneering is false.
bwtf
he often does it better, so maybe a lot of that attention
he gets is ok because he makes it popular for us with his
big skills.

what i gotta say to drukqs is that its the only album i
witnessed being released whilst i knew him, and i prayed
that it would be drum and bass or drill and bass cause i
like squarepusher a lot.
and i love it + he made something new out of it, he comes a
bit more close to techno

Eye. Every now and then an album is released that pushes
music off into bold new directions. With the exception of
SAW 1 and 2 and perhaps some of his early stuff, RDJ hasn't
really done that.

I try not to confuse original brilliance with pioneering.
Aphex has a sound unlike anyone else and has one of the most
diverse stylistic ability of any electronic artist.

Kraftwerk was making crazy ass electronic music in the early
70's man. How is that for pioneering. Aphex Twin WAS a
pioneer IMO, just like Kratwerk WAS a pioneer.

ain't much Aphex Twin stuff I really like now... after
getting into some other stuff, RDJ's stuff just lost some
appeal with me... Drukqs, SAW85-92 is both top notch... come
to daddy is pretty good... other then that, I ain't much
interested in him anymore...

Tangerine Dream deserve WAY more credit. I mean, I'm
listening to Zeit from 1972 by them...it's SO ahead of it's
time...weird blurps, noises, atmospheres, that sound as
advanced as some early 90's ambient stuff.

I agree that Aphex does often manage to do stuff better than
the people who's styles he adopts and he does have a very
unique style to his music.

While I don't think he pioneers styles of music (which was
the point in making this thread) what he does do, which very
few other electronic artists have managed, is to take a
style of music to the next level...

With the exception of the ae style of music, any other genre
within electronic music that I like would probably be topped
by an Aphex track. His is my all time favourite artist and
will probably always be. :D

btw I have been listening to The Bug release all day and I
suddenly remembered Genoside II...anyone remember them?

He's probably not THE pioneer, but he's the best ambassador
and the best at what he does, I think. A jack of all trades,
and totally deserves all the kudos he gets.

agreed, its usually useless to point one artist against the
other...so i usually dont.
and ae, but since everyone has an opinion, i'll just say
that afx does it for me emotionally, where ae usually
remains within the technical, occasionally impressive realm.
there's always this confidence i have that rdj brings you
the real thing (instead of the really calculated thing).

anyway, the reason for the post was more to say that, after
listening to this year's ATP set, i was unmoved. at least
compared to the one i saw last year, where he turned it out.
the set just seemed to go in and out of different phases,
and then end. course it makes a huge difference being there
live, but on the radio it didn't have that thing. who was
there?

i dont know. to me, the live set is where the biggest
innovations are right now. as the computer interfaces
become more instrument-like and less laptop, things are
gonna get good.

you just wonder whether aphex has the endurance to keep
filling the envelope. i figure years of staring at a screen
and slouching over decks can take its toll on you, if your
really trying...maybe he'll go deaf and continue producing
top tracks. that'll convince me.
