Problems with ma new record player

Okay dudes and dudettes, you gotta help me out! I just got
this new record player for free, its pretty old but it's in
mint condition and seems to function alright and stuff. The
problem is, I tried it out for the first time today and
while noise was coming through, it was very low and there
was this high pitched screeching sorta noise over the music.
Does anyone know whats wrong with my turntable or if its
something else? I plugged it into an amp that does 5.1 DD
and all the new stuff, maybe its too new for it?? Oh and
the turntable is a Realistic Lab-400, oldskool :P Any ideas
on what may be wrong and how to amend the situation would be
appreciated :D

Maybe you need a new needle?

have you earthed it to something like a radiator?

also, check your amp have a phono stage/pre amp ('im
guessing both of these are the problem)

you can get pre amp from most hifi stores..

sounds like you need a pre-amp

if youve plugged it into line in, then it wont work. plug in
phono socket or get a phono preamp or dj mixer. id imagine
the cables from the deck are rca phono leads, there should
be 2, one red one white generally. red=right channel. there
should also be a earth wire which you attach to the
grounding socket (usually a screw terminal) on the rear of
the amp/mixer/preamp... or onto a radiator or sink or spike
in the garden. don't put it on the painted(insulated)bit of
the radiator. try wrapping the phono cables in aluminium
foil and grounding one end of it, to reduce ground hum(which
is high in phono cables since they are unbalanced). make
sure the foil doesnt touch the metal contacts on the phono
cables. use a multimeter to check the cables. (should have
very low resistance unless there is a problem). perhaps you
need a new needle or get a new better cartridge if the deck
has a headshell to mount it on. also check if the mains
socket has a third ground cable, test that as well. perhaps
avoid using it near any mobile phones, tv sets, microwave
ovens/transmitters, wires carrying signals e.g. timecode.
finally check that the high pitched sound is not part of the
recording on the record :) thats all i can think of, hope it
helps.

sounds like you're not "plugging" in the ground wire

as it happens being be a bit of hifi enthusiast, i have a
couple of phono stages for sale (will allow you to use a
turntable with an amp that doesn't have a phono input).

one is made by QED and cost me £25. for sale for £10

the other is made by NAD and cost £30. for sale for £15

i have recently bought a new one made by pro-ject

sounds like good value for money, if anyone doesn't have a
phono stage, these are cheap and by good brands.
