Edible Seaweed

what do you know about edible seaweed? it seemed to be
very common when i was in hawai'i to be eating soemthing
with seaweed which, to my surprise, has it's own distinct
and delicious flavor. word on the street is that it's good
for ya too.

other than the obvious sushi, what does one do with seaweed?
or what prepared and prepackaged edible seaweed products do
you find at the grocer?

Oh yeah. Go outside and look under rocks and stuff. You will
hopefully find long slimy things. Now, a lot of people think
these are "worms", BUT THEY AREN'T. They are seaweed...
EDIBLE seaweed. Go ahead, try one. They taste good.

there are some wonderful types of seaweed out there....
wakame, nori, kelp, purple laver, and a ton more.

you can use it to flavour soups (shiro miso soup) u can be
eaten in a salad form with a light vinegar dressing (some
times with hot pepper flakes), or it can be the base for a
soup, (wakame soup, nori soup), it is also used as a
non-animal, thickening agent that is a lot like knotx or
jelly (agar agar). that are candies called "cup jellies" or
"squeeze and bites" that are made from this sea weed
extract.

most sea weeds are eatable.

nori is the most common edible seaweed if i'm not mistaken.

kelp is used to season rice i think.

Seaweed rules! I like the Korean way - lightly grilled and
flavoured with sesame oil and salt. Yum!

enjoying cow manure incense.
but if you like seaweed, good for you, to each his (or her)
own.
it is good for you i'm sure.

thanksomuch thanksomuch :0)

nori is what is used for suchi, no?

Q4Z2X, if you compare seaweed with manure you obviously have
some irrational fear of the stuff. it's kinda like
mushrooms... english and americans have this irrational fear
of the stuff.

i wasn't really trying to compare them, i was trying to show
how one person can love something and another can think it's
shit. pardon the pun.

it's well known that mushrooms are unpopular in the us and
the uk in comparison to other parts of the world. i'm not
being prejudice, there is a cultural bias against them
(especially wild mushrooms) that is absolutely clear in the
literature.

anthropodophobia is bizzare... why? something about the
forms of spiders and bugs just get so many people at some
deep level.

I knew this girl who was a vegan or something and she had
kelp soup or something like that. And some wierd cereal. I
made me nervous being in a house with NO MEAT. I need red
meat. Seaweed was never meant to be ingested by humans.

my body likes an occasional red meat intake, but from my
observations most people's meat habits are addiction.

it probably is some kind of past survival instinct, that
some of us still have, to keep from getting stung/bitten by
a poisonous insect and dieing.

but we've been able to differentiate edible plants from
non-edible, why are so many of afraid of all little
exoskeletal crawly animals? and out-side of the context of
evolution, just thinking right now, it's just bizzare to
think about how certain forms just absolutely trigger
people. psychology is bizzare.

i agree. also,
i really don't understand fear of heights, i mean i
understand how it could be a good thing, because it could
make you avoid getting into a situation where you could fall
to your death, but if you ever are forced into that type of
situation you would likely fall because you are so afraid.

your mom had probably been corrupted by The Octopus Invaders
from Moon (c)

well, there is no SEAWEED salt, I mean, they don't make it
from seaweed, they just add it to keep the balance or
something

seaweed grow in a salt solution environment, so obviouslt
there is going to be salt in seaweed. maybe there is
seaweed extracted salt, which would probably give it a
seaweedy flavor, with all the other things that would come
out of the extraction.

Go to your local china town, you should be able to buy it in
packets, just chuck it in boiling water for 2-3 minutes.
