Does anybody have their precious record colections insured?
Just pondering recently how much moolar I have squandered on
them over the years and how gutted I would be if my house
burnt down or something.. Does anybody have specific
insurance for records (other than just household
insurance).. do you need to get them valued?

Who the fuck would value a load of obscure IDM records..?

the value of it all

Don't be so paranoid, if they get stolen/burn then that's
that. Bye bye birdie.

No most of my collection is in London...

I reckon I have spent more than 30,000 pounds on records /
cds in my lifetime, and if they ever got stolen or house got
burnt down, I would never be able to replace a lot of them -
so would be nice to at least have a bit of $ to make up for
the trauma...

I dont think records are likely to be stolen ( too heavy)
but cd are ideal for nicking - light, easy to shift,
untraceable and moderately valuable.

Think about it... Get insured! Drink your milk! Stay in
school!

What if the guy the insurance company sends has no idea of
the value of the HAB ep's? ;)

Take photographs of the shelves/floor full of them, take
individual pictures of particularly rare releases- HAB, Gak
etc.

If you're really concerned, you should keep all reciepts and
pay to have them stored at a bank. That's a big extreme
though...

most of the major insurance companies do have special
insurances for various collections; stamps, coins etc....
but they have knowledge in rare electronica records. you
have to convince them. that's what i've done.

Really? Did you manage to convince them of the value - was
it hard?

Do you have to pay a hefty premium for this kind of special
insurance? Also - what is it insured against - just being
stolen or destroyed or if you did a dumb thing like leave a
record on a radiator and it melted can you claim for that?

Also is the whole collection insured for a total value, or
are some of the rarer items insured for a certain ammount
separately?

Thanks for your advice...

There are some insurance companies (look in museum/fine art
magazines) that will insure art and are quite open to
increase the amount it's insured for (over what most
companies would agree to) if you're prepared to pay higher
premiums. A bit like insuring things with sentimental value.

I wish I had an insurance a couple of years ago, when some
broke into my place while I was at work and STOLE my entire
record-collection. I was devastated and cried for weeks!!
(Strange though, that they left the tv, the stereo, video
etc.)

BASTARDS!

THey should be hung, drawn and quartered for that...

I really feel for you, Dreamer..

I would be indescribably gutted if my entire record
collection dissapeared all at once.

My father (who is a very serious buddhist) is always talking
about getting rid of material attachments.. Think of having
your tunes ripped off as another step on your path to
enlightenment..

Does that make you feel any better?

My mom always tells me I should get my 400 CDs and expensive
video game collection insured, but I assure her that we're
Canadians and that we live in a land where littering is the
most evil crime of all.

I'd rather spend the money on new music than insuring my
collection.. When it's gone, it'll be gone... I guess the
chance of anything happen like that is very small. I guess.
I hope....

Thanks TokyoJo. ;)
I´m over it now, this happened like 6-7 years ago.......
And I do have the same philosophy as your father deep
inside.
However, I have never felt particularly enlightened because
of this :)
