What is the best turntable for listening, since i am not
necessarily into mixing or DJing as of yet. What's the best
to get set up for listening? Or does it matter much?

That's what it seems to be from looking around on the
intro-net-cyber-space-world-wide-web.

i don't know if there is any notable difference. 1210 was
silver and 1200 black if i remember correclty. i think there
is some other things too but they don't affect usability

The 1210s have a switch on the back so you can flip between
110 and 220 watts, US/Europe

if you're just listening, it's not really that big a deal
what type you're getting... jus' make sure it has all the
decent features: both speeds (78 is nice too... but hardly
necessary)... pitch adjusting (although, this isn't really
that necessary either.. although, if you're like me, you
like to hear stuff at all kinds of different speeds)...
really that's all you need... my table has a reverse
function, which is pretty nifty, but relatively
extraneous... just make sure you get a nice needle that will
last a while and won't fuck up your records... really, the
needle is probably as important as the table itself...

NO!

a direct drive turntable is a DJ tool...

if you plan just to listen then get a hifi belt drive
turntable like a rega or projekt or second-hand linn, they
sound infinitely sweeter!

DO NOT GET A DIRECT DRIVE!

I'm not sure I agree Loogie. I used to have a Belt drive
table, and I've found a huge difference in the sound qualty
when I bought my technics.

Direct Drive did me right. But even more so Technics
themselves just know how to make a perfectly balanced table.

i doubt you would even be able to buy a direct drive
turntable in a hifi shop

the technics 1210 is not a bad turntable, it's just for the
same money you could buy an decent belt drive.

the goals of a direct drive are: durability, spin up speed,
speed adjuster, quick change styli etc.

belt drive: listening pleasure.
