Intelligent? Guess not Dance? Barely Music? True Who came up with this idiot defenition? Don't you feel a little pretentious saying you listen to Intelligent Dance Music? I usually go with terms like Electro or Ambient. |

Yes, my "real world" friends asked what IDM stood for and when I explained they said that it sounds elitist. I tend to agree. They liked the term "drill and bass" though :) |

Yes, I do. Even though I can understand where it comes from (as for the intelligent part). Electronica (that´s what I prefer to call it) was once very innovative and stretched the boundaries of what music should sound like. So yes, a couple of years ago you could call it IDM. But hardly today :) |

I think the term IDM is clear... I've always thought that it had something to do with that dance music in general is pretty "unintelligent", like some like to label it, based almost only on loops, and then you have dance music that almost has no loops in it - it's more "intelligent". Intelligent isn't maybe a good word, since it has nothing to do with wether you use loops or not. But "experimental" DM doesn't really fit, if you want to label music, either. There might not be loops (or there might); but tracks always has some kind of structure (is built around something). anyway, if I got the "correct" definition of IDM, I might not use the term anymore -- I only use it know cause "I know what I'm talking about". And I always say IDM (cause I like thoose letters) and not "Intelligent Dance Music". |

i say, electronic music but AMG All Music Guide says this: IDM..A loaded term meant to distinguish electronic music of the '90s and later that's equally comfortable on the dancefloor as in the living room, IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) eventually acquired a good deal of negative publicity, not least among the legion of dance producers and fans whose exclusion from the community prompted the question of whether they produced stupid dance music. Born in the late '80s, the sound grew out of a fusion between the hard-edged dance music heard on the main floor at raves and larger club events, and the more downtempo music of the nearby chill-out rooms. DJs like Mixmaster Morris and Dr. Alex Paterson blended Chicago house, softer synth-pop/new wave, and ambient/environmental music, prompting a wave of producers inspired by a variety of sources. (Many DJs and producers were also reacting against the increasingly chart-leaning slant of British dance music during those years, exemplified by novelty hits like "Pump Up the Jam" by Technotronic and "Sesame's Treat" by Smart E's.)
