I'm planning on buying some of his stuff, which one(s) of the titles below would you recommend? (if you're into his music of course)
- Piano Music - Piano Music, Incl. 6 Gnos - L'Oeuvre Pour Piano - Popular Piano Works - Gymnopedie - Socrate-Le Piege - Mon Ami Satie - Quatre Preludes-Danses - (Complete) Piano Works Vol. ? - The Best of Erik Satie / Kormendi, Kaltenbach, Nancy SO
Some of these or others maybe, I'd really like some advice. Thanks in advance :)
(i'm only interested in his solo stuff, not him with others or other people playing his music)

"Early Piano works" is a good introduction. I didn't know there were recordings of him playing- I thought it was all other people playing his stuff?

there won't be any records him playing i'm affraid.. but when was radio invented, beginning of 1900 right? i read somewhere that the first commercial radio broadcast was in 1920..
well i think i'll have to do with records with others playing his music :)

Avoid Rheinbert (someone or other)'s versions, he plays too slowly, even for Satie's stuff... there are another two pianists who have done most of his stuff both of which are much better (not to mention you fit more on a CD!)

That's the one, I couldn't think of the way to spell his surname, but that's it. Yep, he plays way to slowly. It's almost like someone sending up Satie's style!
You stick to listening to de leeuw on Philips hi-fis if you want to be patriotic, the
rest of us will all be listening to Pascal Roge's versions on Marantz hi-fis :P

I have the Reinbert De Leeuw-cd actually :-p
And i like it alot, don't listen to Ceri, get that note out of the garbage-bin again!
Hehe, well actually i don't have any other satie-cd's, so i don't know... i might like them even better. Reinbert plays very slowly, but i like it. I think it sounds great.
Do you know that television-commercial for Algemeen Dagblad? "misdaad voordat het misdaad is" enzo? The music in there is the 5th gnossiene from the reinbert-cd.

I've got a lot of tracks by De Leeuw and by Roge... I really do prefer Roge, but I suppose it's a matter of taste.

Some guy used the southpark-figure with the æ-shirt....
really? here on xltronic? wow, that's funny! haven't seen him yet..
Hey surrounded (or someone else) do you think THIS one is worth to get? I'd really like to have those Gnossiennes..
and (if you have the time) have a look at www.bol.com and search for 'satie' at the music section
there's just too much!!! "piano works vol. 10" ?! i don't know which one to get!
ow i don't think i'll get those 'de leeuw' ones since the frontcovers have those "philips" bars (at least the ones i've seen)
yes i'm one of those idiots who also cares for the cd-cover, i don't like those cheap and ugly ones..
boy, this is going to get tough..

yeah the cover is horrible. But i've never seen any erik satie-cd that had a good cover :-(
It's a terrible tragedy... someone should make a nice compilation of his best tracks and design some decent artwork for it. Maybe someday i'll do it myself ;-)

just 'cause i don't have any of his stuff yet, it's not really the same as Glass, both minimalistic though
my sister told me this weekend she had a book with Satie's music (sheet music for piano) somewhere at home,
man i'm gonna borrow (read: steal) that one

Nonetheless classic piano is perfect for specific moments..

I like this one by Ciccolini. A lot of pieces at a reasonable price. There's also a disc of newer recordings by Ciccolini, but I haven't been able to find it for comparison.

i will! i don't know how long it'll take though, first i have to get that book and then i have to work on it
i only have a real piano (no keyboard or something) and it's at my parents house (since i have no room for it), so i won't have much time to study, but when i'm at my parents i'm mostly playing piano (it's one of the main reasons i visit them :D )
i'll have to try what best to record it, i think my md-recorder with a mic or something..
i'll try somethin' out :)

You play the piano? I didn't know that. Boy, I tell ya', knowing you is like going out in the jungle. I never know what I'm going to find next!
Seriously though, that is pretty cool :-) I sometimes wish i could play a musical instrument. I too would like to hear you play some satie.
