changing artist-name

I was thinking about how I often change artist-name every
time i stumble into a new project, and how artists like
Richard and Ae have done the same (well, especially
Richard).

What are your oppinions on changing artist-name? childish?
unnecessary? stupid? cool?

I started out calling myself 'junktion', made a whole bunch
of electronic music. Then I kinda evolved into 'garagelab',
but still keeping 'junktion' as a side-project. Then came
'parallax scroll' which was a more groovier version of it
all.
And now I have collected it all into one single artist-name
which I will stick too - 'sean junk' ...

.. if you're comfortable with a name, may as well stick with
it. if not, make a new one. that's what i find and reckon.
doesn't have to be childish - although it can sometimes be
difficult to follow someone's releases if they keep changing
names.

it just is .. not more or less cool than keeping the same
name.

we like the word cause everyones got their own image
associated with it

:D

I associate my different artist names with the the style of
track. Automaticc: Drill'n'bass,
breakbeats...Xammax:Experimental hip-hip and D-Grade for
experimental electronic/IDM.

different names for different projects thats what i say. I
have 3 projects:
The main one being
squareartheory [.com]
the others have different names. Its all about association.
I wouldnt want any of my projects to be related to the
other, cause they're all completely different. I think aphex
changing his name all the time is just annoying, its harder
to track down his music. Fair dos aphex twin and AFX cause
theyre different labels

usually unecessary, unless there is a member/drastic style
change... more the member thing than anything.

'pachi' is better suited as a name for a personal character

for an experimental project i'd label it as 'ecometric'

ive been doing music since i was 13 or so as JAroen... but
that name starts to bore me... caus in holland jeroen is a
normal name so i think its just lame to replace a letter...

so im gonna change my name... but i dunno into what yet :s

one thing i say to people when they are considering a name
change... dont just pick whatever. pick something
meaningfull to you. its like a tatoo. dont just pick
something just to have it. tibbar is a part of me. my
history. it reminds me of my dad. it means something to me.
it IS me. its all just my opinion, but i think it's wise.

offline JAroen from the pineal gland on 2003-04-13 03:33 [#00647691]
Points: 16065 Status: Regular

yeah i think it sould be something that actually means
something... not just some random letters

offline tibbar from harrisburg, pa (United States) on 2003-04-13 03:35 [#00647695]

agreed. like "aphex twin" obviously means something to
richard... "autechre" has it's "meaning" to them... go for
something of value.

i dont mind,really... but I'd rather have one artist name
that would be catergorised into many different styles -
rather than many names, with one-style-per-name.

maybe i do mind then :-)

I'm totally rubbish @ making up cool names but I'd say if
you get known with a particular name you shouldn't change
it.
