new drive problem

I bought a 200 GB hard drive about a month ago.. when I
installed it it allowed only about 126GB.. that's my first
problem. my second problem is that every now and then, after
extended idle periods.. like if I'm reading while listening
to an mp3 playlist, the new drive will just suddenly decide,
"you know what? fuck this, why do I need to be here right
now" and will click off, sending the entire computer into a
state of paralysis to be relieved only upon restarting the
computer. how do I prevent this from happening? I know you
can set the power settings in the control panel for the
initial drive of the computer, how do I do the same for any
subsequently-installed drives?

I use winxp if that helps responding to either question.

thanks.

this only happens intermittently by the way.. I can be away
from the computer for almost 2 days without this happening

126 GB sounds like it might be a BIOS limitation. Check the
specs on your motherboard to see if it supports drives that
large.

Yep it is down to your BIOS. The full formatted capacity
should be about 186GB. But about 128GB is the maximum on
older BIOS.

that sucks. though one could see this as being another 200
extra gb for my next computer..heh...in the meantime though
I cant help but feel I wasted money on 72 extra gb

how many years off would you say the first 1 TB or 1.5 TB
hard drive is.. (that is, available commercially as I'm sure
such technologies have already been developed for yeras)

I have no idea, but I think you'll start to see a trend
toward pre-built (granny-friendly) RAID boxes instead of
single drives because no one wants to store that much data
with a single point of failure.
