AE is not getting my money anymore

offline Paco from Gothenburg (Sweden) on 2003-04-11 10:16 [#00644906]

Draft is probably the first AE release I won't buy (along
with the Ganz Graf DVD). Going by the few mp3's I've got of
it and how boring and stupid Confield sounded, I doubt that
there's a hidden jewel on Draft. I want to like AE, but I
just can't pretend, like some of you.

Recently it's just been noise. Boring noise that I can do
whenever I want on my Nord Modular. The lack of any
direction is just a waste of time for the listener.

Still hoping for a great AE release in the future. Being the
clever lads they are, this probably won't happen.

-P

I know what he means. Draft 7.30 is a bit of a let down.
They were really heading somewhere with LP5 and Confield had
a certain vibe running through it, but I think Draft sounds
a bit too Alien. I dunno, maybe my opinion will change, but
I'm sure no-one will disagree that they should do more
tracks like the first one off Peel Session. They can still
make it dynamic, and ahead of it's time. The trouble with
Draft is that even though all the tracks must have been put
together maticulously, A lot do sound like random noise.
Surripere and 6ie.cr are excellent though.

offline Q4Z2X on 2003-04-11 10:49 [#00644964]
Points: 5264 Status: Lurker

maybe their intention was for it to sound like random noise,
but you have to actually sit down, give it a chance, and
listen carefully in order to recognize the greatness of
their subtle human intervention in the alien world of draft
7.30.

i can understand how somebody might not like a ae, but wtf
is up with this treand of whiners who are no longer
satisfied with expressing their dislike of ae, but must now
make comments like "but I just can't pretend, like some of
you. " ae seem to trigger a lot of people and they can't
handle others' appreciation of it. ridiculous. shut up

"maybe their intention was for it to sound like random
noise,
but you have to actually sit down, give it a chance"

If I sit down and listen to it for a few times, I'll
probably start to learn how the clicking and clipping is
going to be the next second. What is the point to learn
yourself tracks that don't evoke any feelings at all?

When I put on something like Tri Rep for the first time I
thought "Fuck yeah! This is awesome!". Ganz Graf and the
Draft mp3's don't give me anything at all. I don't want to
sit down and learn how the tracks go just to be able to
enjoy them after severe brainwash. the music should give you
a sense of wonder and amazement immediately.

This is difficult to explain :)

so what, so you don't think its good music.

whoopie-fucking-do.

it must be their fault - it could NEVER be that their
evolution as an artist is further than your evolution as a
listener, naaah..

now make new topics on all the other albums you don't like.

i think it's a mistake to assume that others are pretending
to like music that one does not like (forgetting the
subjectivity of experience is, after all, common), but it's
perhaps a bigger mistake to react emotionally to those sorts
of comments. why waste your energy getting angry, or even
just irritated? if you believe it is human nature, then you
will act it out. that said, i will probably not be buying
draft, either, having heard the direction of confield and
gantz graf. autechre has begun to remind me of academic
music; so concerned with the counterintuitive and
non-referential, it ignores the qualities which make music,
for me, worth pursuing. i hear tracks which are grinding
digital noise, with incoherent yet deliberate twists and
turns, with no point but the lack of point, with simple,
undeveloped melodic motifs drifting around, and then read
others comment about how "lush" and "organic" and wonderful
the tracks are. i do understand why some individuals might
conclude that the people who so highly praise these dry,
grey compositions might be fooling themselves. then again,
i remember when lp5 came out and many longtime, faithful
fans declared that is was an unlistenable morass of noise,
yet lp5 is still my favorite lp.

alright, maybe im missing something completely

im not sure i understand how melody = emotion. seems these
are just blanket statements.

"Well, obviously something with melody is much more
"emotional" than things without because i let some odd years
of music theory be beaten into my head tricking my head that
YESSIR melody equals emotion nothing else matters it has to
have MELODY AND TONES OTHERWISE ITS NOT EMOTION"

despite the fact the difference between tones and "noise" as
one calls it are very few. so i cant get emotion out of
rhythmic sounds? is that against the law? am i breaking some
sort of metaphysical rule designed as part of the universe
from the very start?

the difference between good and bad music is a wave-shape
away, apparently.

(and yes, i do like melodic music, plaid being next in line
and they spew out the nice tones like nobodies business)

like confield, draft 7.30 took me awhile to understand. it
wasnt untill i put it on a few nites ago, whilst i was in
the right mood, and more than a little stoned, that i fully
appreiciated it. Now i cant get enough.
if it keeps growing on me at this rate i will have to go to

me whole.

(of course, i dont really think its any good at all, im just

i can see what pacos saying

i bought draft 730, its a good headfukc, but basically i
listened to it like 3 times, and its been in my rack since.
whereas something like hard noraml daddy i always listen
to.

i mean its really hard to get into, i think they spend so
much time getting that draft/confield metal sound that when
they do, they think 'fuck it' and just have the same loop
again and again, thats always been ae's problem, i like the
tracks that have subtle progressions like drane. but the
stuff on draft just seem like repetitive shit, the same
machine malfunctionaing again and again doing yer head in

here's my ae experience so far:

I bought tri-repetae++, my first autechre album, and found
it extremely boring at first, but it did sort of creep into
my brain and grow on me.

I bought my second autechre album, confield, and loved it
straight away. it's completely engrossing, much looser and
more natural sounding.

I guess there's no accounting for taste.
