XBM support! Just kidding.
PNG support is pretty ubiquitous these days, and a lot of programs are starting to support MNG too (animation). So yay!

I'd not heard of MNG... that'd be interesting to see. Got any links to MNG animations?

Here. Recent versions of Mozilla can view MNGs, I'm not sure about other browsers.

Dunno what "PBG" is mate, ;) IE (prior to version) 4.5 for the Mac, Webster, Some internet enabled phones and Dreamcast dreamkey 1.1 (and 1.0)don't support PNG so far as I know...
There are others, but I can't think of them right now. Some don't support it at all, others don't allow transparencies.

Just out of interest, why would PNG be better? Without MNG support all it really allows is slightly smaller file sizes, which, for single frame jpg/single frame gifs (on this site at least) aren't limited in size so as to be a problem. That said, I imagine the slight file size decrease would increase page refresh speed for 56K users on threads with many different users, so perhaps you're right... png may be useful.
Ha ha I just talked myself around to PNG in one post.

We don't want people to have to go DLing plugins to read the mb... you may as well start supporting flash etc. if you do that :|

shhhhh! Ceri...have you ever had that mental itch that something should be ifferent....this is one of these mental itches for me :P I just want PNG instead of sloppy JPG ...some people here have to go low-quality on they're JPG's to get it on here, and with PNG, it wouldnt look so blurred

You could have some really cool avatars with PNG's alpha channel transparency support.

Seriously, do you have some pngs that illustrate this? I'm into graphics and this interests me.

Heh, I keep my other avatars in reserve. :-)
Here are some alpha channel images. There are a few more links at the bottom of the page. Alpha channel PNG isn't as well supported as regular PNG, hopefully IE6 is up to snuff.

There was an article at a list apart about using png in different browsers.
Here's an example with a floaty transparent png in a div, for webnerds only.
Yay, PNG all the way.

Well... after all, macs are aimed at hippy graphics fiends, of course it'd support them ;)
Inv. whale:
Ah, quite nice- easier than nabbing the html value of the cream/yellow background and filling in the gaps with that fro pictures you want a standard background on.

something is weird about IE for mac and .png's...
on os9 version, it supports them totally on osX version, you can view them when it's included on a page, but cannot see them "individually" ('open the picture in a new window')!
wtf ' _ -

You can have PNG support on IE5/6 on the PC via the use of stylesheets and a function call to a Microsoft filter - it's a pretty poor workaround, and it drains server resources (this is for server-side PNG support, and your users don't have to have anything.
I've switched to Mozilla 1.3 (that supports PNG perfectly), and supposedly IE7 (which isn't in Beta yet) will support PNG.
PNG is great because it finally eliminates the need for slicing up graphics to create complex interfaces for websites - now, with varying levels of transparency, you can overlap objects and they can shift/move with no need of aliasing against the background colour/imagery.
One way to get around that with GIF is to create pseudo-shadows... take a look at the http://aphextwin.watmm.com main page and look at the tan-coloured sidebar on the left - on the right edge you'll notice a semi-transparent shadow that was achived by making a selection in PhotoShop and filling with a black and fully transparent checkerboard pattern (2x2 pixels). On low res screens (800x600) it's noticable, but at higher res (1024x768 +) it looks transparent because the pixels are too small to see clearly. This was an old effect in early video games to achive shadows, an d the game designer would turn these checkerboard shadows on and off rapidly to create a semi-transparent shadow effect.
