make melodies by any means man, its more creative that way

My suggestion would be to get a crack copy of a VST sytnh.
Dpeends what type of sounds you want as well.

I've made melodies in many ways. I never use synths, only
samples.

I don't know - I try to keep my methods changing all the
time. thats why I am surprised when I find I've made a
melody - those are mostly the best. the ones I find by
accident are mostly the weirdest - I could never have
thought them up.

I prefer working with old analouge hardware synths and
putting them through a FX pedal. I love pushing it to the
limits and it's so satisfying when you create some LO-Fi
Ring Mod bass line thats soyunds so messed up and so good at
the same time

I play them on the piano, or anything else which can make a
melody. I think. Er....

Don't use completely random, boxed tunes .. find some type
of creative way! Like, think of a little arpeggio and put
that in, and then play little harmonies in your head and
beat them out .. or something. Or not, it's just more fun
to hear a track you've made and be able to say, 'I made
that' rather than 'ooh yeah I hit randomize on that'. I
donno, give it a try. If you mean a program to help you
write your own stuff, then my mistake, hehe. I would
suggest Buzz becuase that's what I use. Of course, I'm a
little out of my league when it comes to acid and stuff.

i use buzz too :)) (www.buzzmachines.com btw)
i tend to find stuff happens almost accidentally at first. i
rarely get a spark of inspiration where a melody comes to me
in a flash (maybe thats why my tunes are devoid of melody
:p). once i have say, a bassline or something, i take the
dogs for a walk whilst its still spinning round & round in
my head, adding imaginary harmonies and stuff, then try and
replicate the sounds in my head when i get in.

If you try to make a melody it will never work. A melody
comes from your emotions not your brain.

I was going to make a topic like this. Orange dust makes the
best melodies here I think.
I want to know how everyone loops their tones.. Do you use a
really small section of sound and loop that for a tone?
etc.

I experimented naively with "melody" by briefly "studying"
frequencies. In modplug tracker, I used the tiniest
percussion sound to make varioiusly spaced clicks, every one
possible. In the lame illustration below, 0=empty space
equal in size to one sound click and 1= one sound click. So
I saved a wav with the following frequencies:
111111111111111111111111111111111

101010101010101010101010101010101

100100100100100100100100100100100

10001000100010001000100010001000

100001000010000100001000010000

etc (keep adding an extra space in the next frequency)..
then I saved it as a wav and played it as fast as possible
and it sounded interesting and melodyish but not perfect. I
then read on the internet the specific frequencies per
second of each note and then I didn't go any further. And
that ends my awesome story.

see, the 1111111111 and the 1010101010 are an octave apart
and the 100010001000 is another octave lower. They sound
good together because they phase perfectly.

The last two lines of the ones and zeros in my other post
should phase every 20 units, since 5 times 4=20. I wanted to
be able to control melody at this microscopic level, that
would be awesome.

A little piano or guitar theory helps, but the best tunes
happen at this place

just a midi keyboard. one with its own power supply too, the
ones that run off pc power are a joke. youll need one of
those computer midi cables too. and youre off. most music
software will take it.

Melodies? I'm flattered, but I've been told over and over
that I can write drums but my melodies suck, and uhh I think
they're probably right.

The way I do it is pretty much just mess around until i find
somethign I like,or else I play wth my old keyboard and
shit, or the midi keyb opn the compuer until I fnid
somethign cool.

Occasionally (very occasionally) I'll make a tune in my head
and put it down on paper or figure it out on the keyboard
but that's pretty rare

I'll write melodies for you,and you write drums for me.

you pay attention not only to the pitch but to the sound
quality... like in the very starting melody in "what is
intelligence anyway", there are like 4 different types of
melody sound used only in the first 10 seconds. (the long
drone type1 with the echo part type1, and then the drone
type2 with the echo part type2). How do you make sure that
all the different types of sounds are of the same pitch?
Like.. do you use wav files for the melody, or do you use
looped pieces of sound? And if they are looped, they are all
the same length of loop right?

od: have you ever heard www.mp3.com/imaginary and if so do
you like it? I bought "music for singing hippos" and it's
one of the best melody dominated releases I've heard along
with your stuff.

I use synths, mostly
softsynths inbuilt to fruity, so maknig them all in tune is
usually pretty easy.

Those synths in that track were the Fruityloops 3xOSC wioth
some echo. And I complressed them to make them punchy.

No I haven't heard anythnig from the imaginary site... hang
on...that looks familiar....where have I seen this
before...?

It's not your's is it, coz you're artificial selection,
right?

im the king of depressing synths :]

but you know, 3 years of being obsessed with autechre will
do that do you

No, I didn't make that imaginary fantasy music. I actually
found out about imaginary fantasy by searching for
"nintendo" in mp3.com's search engine. mp3.com sucks since
they limited everyone to 3 tracks. I really love those
melodies though, too bad you can't hear them all anymore
unless you buy the album. I'll look up soft synths in google
to see what they are. (and yeah some of my music is under
artificialselection)

softsynths = synthsizers that are programs rather than
synths that you buy and hold in your hands

software synths

like in fruity i use
ts404
WASP
SimSynth Plugin
3xOSC (a lot)
etc etc...

i think that program called Reason (v1.0 or 2.0 ) should be
the best way to create melodies - you can download demo
version of program at the site of Propellerhead ( they have
made ReBirth ) and then you just collect samples and....
have fun

I put in something completely random, then chisel away until
I'm left with something good. Not a good method, but I'm
hardly too concerned with that until I work out this MIDI
bullshit. The keyboard I have is a DJX-II and I haven't got
a fucking clue!
