these 2 are top of the idm (at least in xltronic competition hehe)...i thought about comparing this two last night when there was some talk of autechre (and i really cant see/hear why so many people are excited about their music)
so this is what i think about it...autechre are doing music unintentionaly imo-i mean they put the melody and some beats together-and it doesnt exactly fit together, i mean they could exchange plenty of beats and melodies between songs and it would still sound pretty much the same...while aphex creates music, he composes it,... beats go great with melody and there could hardly be a track of his where you could exchange beats and melody-it would spoil the track for sure...
im surprised of how many people think autechre are better than aphex, especially because there's many of you that make your own music, so it gives you an idea of how it looks like to do a piece like autechre or a piece like aphex...i mean, i often get this feeling when listening to autechre that they just experiment until they get some cool, weird sounding melody or beat, that doesnt change much later or they just add a new weird sound-i dont mind repetitive music, actually i like many artists that do music like that, but their music is very pleasant, it gives me this great feeling which i just cant get with autechre's music...
im sure most of you disagree with me, but i came to conclusion that aphex and autechre cant really be compared when it comes to making music...

You should really try some of ae's early work. How can you say it's just some randomly put together melody and rhythm after hearing that?

you got that right at least. let's just leave it there. I like both afx and ae, but for very different reasons.

i just want people to post their opinion on this (donr want to start any bash)
yeah, their early work is a bit better, but honestly, there are many artists that make the same music and are much better as autechre were in the begining
no doubt autechre deserve to be up there-they are doing music for a long time. lots of people love them, but when it comes to composing music they're very overrated IMO

OK, I'll recommend you some tracks (early ae):
444 Kalpol Introl Eggshell Montreal Eutow Vletrmx21 Second Peng
There's so much more actually, in fact, you should try Amber and Incunabula in its entirety.

some tracks of autechre are really awesome! Piezo, 444, Cichli, CapIV, Clipper, Leterel, and especially Vltrmx21 are masterpieces imo. Many other tracks (i.e. ep7) aren't so great imo.

The melody who grow in CapIV is amazing. I like the fact who often you've to dig inside mechanical repetitive harsh sounds for discover wonderful melodies.

To all the non-ae fanatics:
I do admit that ae's music can be quite hard to get into and this goes especially for their latest work (confield, gantz graf, ep7), but as cliché as this might sound: Give it some time and you'll be rewarded with some of the best music you'll ever hear. I didn't think much of autechre either in the beginning, but now I would say it comes dangerously close to afx.

Aphex Twin is my fav, but his music is simpler to understand compared to Ae.
Firts time who I listened Gantz Graf, I thought:"what is this shit?!?" After 3 or 4 listens I discovered who CapIV is an amazing complex track (with a superlative melody) and gantz graf track was a powerfull load of electronic energy.

the rhytms and melodies Ae use are weird (maybe not the correct term, sorry for that).
they do combine different parts, sort of paste the bars onto each other. Sometimes their beats and patterns just fasten up and so on.
It might nog be easy to get into, and loads of people will never get in to it.
Can't say anything more besides that I like them.

i agree, Ae music is totally cold while AFX music is more emotional.
AFX has more fantasy, imo anyway they've totally differents style an it's why i love both.
There are too different style imo:
AFX electronic and Ae electronic. Many artists are copying from one or from the other.

random my arse! AE is v emotional too i reckon....oh! and by the way a computer doesnt just decide by itself to do a tune...its still just a tool....you want it to do random stuff, you still gonna have to explain to the machine how to do it(program it)....
i love both their music.....but i prefer ae

I want someone with all the albums from both artists to choose. I only have Tri Repetae++ by Autechre, and I have a strictly love/hate relationship with it.
Whereas I have 5 albums by Aphex and I think they're all great... obviously I'm going to pick Aphex.
