tricky, RZA (or should I say Bobby)

sell-out:
photek

fell off:
roni size

there are many more

The Prodigy - boy, they really blew with Fat Of The Land. I
remember the good 'ol days when i was the only kid in my
neighbourhood who listened to Prodigy.....

I'm thinking aphex is on his way.. we'll see w/ smojphace..
he hasn't yet though marlowe

what did slipknot do to sell out? isnt their whole thing a
gimmick to begin with?

offline tibbar from harrisburg, pa (United States) on 2003-04-08 06:34 [#00638543]

yeah, you can't sell out if you NEVER had integrity.

that's normally the argument against people accusing people
LIke Moby of selling out.

offline rockenjohnny from champagne socialism (Australia) on 2003-04-08 06:37 [#00638550]
Points: 7983 Status: Lurker

sell out - aphex
what is he doing? hes been standing still for the past few
years..

fall off - underworld.
i still love them, but their splitting up was a tragedy

offline tibbar from harrisburg, pa (United States) on 2003-04-08 06:37 [#00638551]

well, moby is just weak.

johnny: you didnt like "two months off"? good track, cant
speak for the rest of the album.

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2003-04-08 06:39 [#00638556]
Points: 24593 Status: Regular

I was referring to Aphex Twin allowing his sonic creations
to advertise corporations, not the quality of his sonic
creations.

id let someone use one of my songs... if i liked the product
or organization.

he also let the special olympics use "goon gumpas" for their
charity's commercial.

i love two months off to bits

also the songs little speaker and twist

the rest of the album worried me tho :/ plus im one of those
people that misses the original vocalist..

offline tibbar from harrisburg, pa (United States) on 2003-04-08 06:43 [#00638563]

yeah... i havent even heard the new massive attack, and i
know everyone is singing it's praises, but... dude... 2 out
of 3 people are now gone. how "massive attack-ish" can it
be. plus sinead o'connor is on it. yuck.

offline danbrusca from Derbyshire (United Kingdom) on 2003-04-08 07:22 [#00638674]

The thing to note about Aphex Twin is that while he is a
sell-out, he's completely shameless about it, which I fully
respect.

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2003-04-08 07:24 [#00638679]
Points: 24593 Status: Regular | Followup to danbrusca: #00638674

why? By flaunting it, he's hoping to be respected and
somehow seen as post-modern ironic -- it's a gimmick, don't
be fooled.

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2003-04-08 07:25 [#00638681]
Points: 16280 Status: Lurker

I don't like the term sell-out, cause it's not for me to
say... someone isn't a sell-out just because they make a
commercial album, nor are they one if they set out to try
and be more commercial... it's all in the intentions to make
money and all that I think... and well, I just don't know
peoples intentions...

offline danbrusca from Derbyshire (United Kingdom) on 2003-04-08 07:27 [#00638684]

I would answer, but I haven't got a fucking clue what
'post-modern ironic' means ;)

Quite true, but I believe that he really doesn't care at all
what people think and that he is probably also quite
apolitical.

what, you cant try to make a living from music?

offline X-tomatic from ze war room on 2003-04-08 12:38 [#00639144]
Points: 2901 Status: Lurker

there's only one true sell-out:

-metallica

I mean these guys made millions of dollars thanks to solid
music and underground fanbase, and they stil reckoned it
wasn't enough so they popped the charts and sued napster
because they claimed lost income.
I mea really, can I have a bucket to puke in plz?

offline X-tomatic from ze war room on 2003-04-08 12:52 [#00639165]

fell off of my taste would be aphex twin.
that drill n bass stuff really don't bother me

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2003-04-08 13:13 [#00639187]

but how do you know they did all that just to make more
money? You can't expect a band like them to make hardcore
metal forever... what's his name, James Hetfield recently
had a kid, I saw him in an interview, so you have to think
that's going to change the type of music you want to make...
plus, they're older and more mature... as you said, they
were the best selling metal band before they even reached
the charts... so, it's not like they felt the need to reach
the charts to make more money...

classic fall off: Cypress Hill

i'm inclined to call Metallica sell-outs, although they
still have some good songs here and there.

snoop doggy dogg, obviously..

after his doggystyle album, which is fucking brilliant and
always will be, he spat out albums like knocked out teeth.
fucking sad shit.

does it bother anyone else that aphex's new album is being
described as "ragga techno"? is he now trying to appeal to
the (shudder) sean paul audience?

that's what I'm talking about!!

all reports of from those who have heard his new material
say it's more accessable.. and judging from the 26 mixes new
tracks (the 'original mix' is a bit of a misnomer) it sounds
like his shit is real basic now.. dance-floor friendly

Do you not like direct music? forget 'dance' music, music
that you like straight away not pseudo intilectual crap.
REAL Techno, REAL hip hop, Real Rock. When you play live do
you want to fuck people off?

fell off and sold out:
live
tricky
moby
dmx

i'm not saying the above were really great to begin with
(maybe tricky) but generally i'm pretty patient with artists
when they release an album i don't like. nin put out "deep"
which was horrendous but then he saved himself with the
still ep.

aphex sold out a while ago but really, who gives a shit? hes
aphex twin, he can do that.

and its not like aphex really sold out, he isn't publicly
well known. just technically sold out. if he actually became
popular the world would explode.
