am, I am consumer?

"I am consumer ... i am the end user, i am the product
choser ..." - Numbers' track off Tigerbeat6: And the beat
goes off

My question is this - do you peeps think the general idm
crowd (yes yes i know) - something to that effect, are
subjected to similar marketing forces (/resulting in a
similar compulsion) to buy new releases etc. as say people
that are into more public music? why?

I think the head of bebecula records said it best when he
said (I'm paraphrasing), "The IDM crowd is seem as elitist
and selective. They are quick to put down commericalism and
promotion in pop acts, but don't seem to realise it happens
in this genre as much as any other..."

I'm inclined to agree, I don't think anyone would deny that
the Astrobotnia launch was a fantastic bit of marketing.
Don't get me wrong- I absolutely love these releases, parts
1&3 are my favourite releases of last year with the possible
exception of Geogaddi... It's just I wonder how many
excellent albums/tracks I've missed out on as they weren't
marketed so well?

slave to the packaging...

Ah .. oops ...

Ceri: yeah, totally agree. personally i think (though
haven't listend in a while) astrobotnia2 is the best, but
there you go. maybe that's because i'm an elitist snob i
like limited rare stuff more? hehe..

26 Mixes for Cash is a prime example imo. The whole ironic
or something twist works wonders. Got some nice tunes on
there

diastole: packaging? how do you mean .. cover art and
things? or the whole "parcel" effect by buying it on the
net? mm..

Nothing wrong with Astro 2- that was the "straw that broke
the camel's back" and finally resolved me to buying record
decks!

haha .. they really suckered you didn't they :)

well, my back almost broke, as i suddenly thought of all
these 12" only releases i could get (following my
consumer/hoarding instinct).

so did i get it right, you liked geogaddi, coz i felt i got
suckered into buying that one a bit. mmm...

I really like Geogaddi, I keep changing my mind about how
good it is -at the moment I prefer MHTRTC, but if you'd
asked me two months ago I'd of said I liked it more than
MHTRTC :)

speaking of consumer...

has anyone ever read the book "the consumer" by m. gira?

i HIGHLY recommend it for those with a tough stomach for the
more gruesome side of life. it is raw and emotional. it is
hard to put down, once you get started.

that's good i s'pose :)

haven't listened to boc much recently ... more into just
rhythmic stuff at the moment (takeshi muto). a bit of guitar
(a la fennesz and hrvatski). matt minimalism : can't wait
for draft

seriously... anyone who likes short stories that
inter-relate kinda thing... and anyone who likes stuff like
lovecraft, poe, ligotti, etc... this is for you. one of the
greatest modern dramatic books i have read.

tibbar: sounds intriguing .. is this conspiracy type
stuff? mmm...

i'm quite fascinated with the almost ritual like compulsion
of the "consumerist society" (me included) buying stuff in
order to play this "game" ...

also intrigued with the concept of "waste" (eg. George
Bataille's Restricted vs General Economy)

how can you NOT be a consumer? seems pretty impossible now
days......most of the time you dont even realise it....our
whole society is kinda based around this...

no no no. not conspiracy type stuff. more like deviant
society and deviant man and his place in a society that
wants his soul. some of the story titles: the job, the man,
the woman, the bastard, the boss, the boy who hid his body
inside of a horse (or: my vulvic los angeles), a screw, why
i ate my wife, raping a slave

like i said, gritty reading... but he said his intent was to
expose the ugliness and insanity of humankind and reulse you
away from it. to keep you away from joining in on the orgy.

How was Astrobotnia marketed? I heard people talking about
it on here so I downloaded some. Hope they didn't pay an ad
agency to come up with that strategy.

BTW nothing wrong with consumption from my perspective. I
enjoy exchanging symbolic value for goods and services.

But part of the fun of being a music fan is discovering new
treasures that the music cartels weren't particularly eager
to tell you about. Makes you feel... lucky!

though - why distance yourself from the orgy. its an immense
pressure to join in ... ethics i guess huh? that's quite
cool.

cuz he has a tendency to do that. very short descriptive
sentences. we used to make fun of his style alot...
imagine it in a thick georgian accent (which he has)

my birth is a hole. a hole in my mothers skull. it sucks the
poison out. i feel empty. i am a tomb. my birth is
indirectly a result of someone else's death. i feel blood in
my skull.

his stuff is better. we could do it for hours.

fleetmoose: true nothing wrong with consumption per
se. but it just seems, if you're not caught up in it that it
can seem really alienating and pointless. this whole
symbolic exchange resembles (i'm exaggerating here) a
japanese tea ceremony. mmm.. you go to work to buy stuff you
don't need.
