sting is one of the greatest artists of the past 30 years. I saw this documentary on how he created his music when he was in the police, inspiring stuff, I have nothing but respect for his musical talents.

yeah saw that too. I'm not much for "the police"'s work, but I like the styles he's playing with, and the sound he creates with experimenting with music combinations.

If you listen to to the later "the police" work, I think you hear an evolution towards the early "Sting" work.
And I just love hearing bands/musicians evolve. And I've seen other documentaries than the one you're talking about, and I can say one thing: the man is interesting!

I like Sting, that much maligned man. But I love his work with the Police a lot more than his solo stuff... especially early police, when it was a little rawer.
Whenever I think of Sting, I think of that episode of the Simpsons where Bart is trapped in the well and Sting comes to help dig him out. And he takes of his shirt. Sting's a handsome guy.

and it has nothing to do, or should have anything to do, with going soft... it's just another style of music... so what if he's considered a "pop" act... some pop is good... pop is a broad term, which simply refers to popular, not bubble gum pop crap... good music can be popular...

"good music can be popular"
that has been proven from time to time. Today it's getting more and more uncommon though.

I agree about it getting more uncommon... I mean, I absolutely love 80's pop... it's seriously some of my favorite and most fun music to listen to... a lot of the pop from the 80's, I guess most of what is still played now, was good... but most of the pop on the radio and stuff now does suck... all the stupid, so called, "bling-bling" rap and r'n'b just annoys me... but I do still hear stuff I enjoy on the radio, and mostly tv... I watch much more music a lot...
