I'm having an internship for my study at Philips now. I was
wondering how people from other countries think about this
brand, is it considered quite crappy or do you look at it as
being among brands like technics, pioneer etc. ?

I was just wondering about this, i think everybody knows
Philips, but i always thought that it's only a 'popular'
brand here in the netherlands and maybe some other european
countries.

I think it's seen as a good cheap brand here.

All these opinion threads... it's like being at a market
research websie without the prizes/cash incentives :)

well i think that's a main part of a mb, sharing opinions
(of course mostly about music though), hope you don't mind
threads like these, i was just wondering :)

and it was indeed as i thought, that it's seen as a cheap
brand in other countries :\

philips.. philips is quality consumer electronics. one of
known and trusted brands here ('its not even japanese, it
must be good') i think we have some philips part in the
downstairs audio center

Don't worry, Phillips = hi-fis = music related = no problem!
:)

Are they actually popular in Holland then? I mean, people
would choose them over panasonic/technics etc. even if they
were the same price?

The USA only knows the philips brand as Magnavox right??

Just like some EU countries only know Philips as 'Aristona'
which also can be found here in NL....

I won't, but it is seen as a high quality standard here. I
guess on the same level as Sony. I know that's especially a
dutch vision. It's not that popular in the US.

"The USA only knows the philips brand as Magnavox
right??
"

lol, oh really? I once had a magnavox-stereo... it sucked!
Buttons were litterally falling off :-p

"hmm i think i can get'em a bit cheaper now that i work
here, not much though
"

Ah well... nevermind then. The costs off me going all the
way to eindhoven would probably be more expensive than the
actual discount ;-)

"..but who wants a philips tv anyway ey ;)"

lol, well i'm not critical in the tv-department anyway. If
it just has a good clear screen i'll be happy. So i should
be able to find a cheap one anyway, if i'm not looking for
anything fancy.

funny to see opinions between uk and finland differ

ceri: i think panasonic/technics etc. is a bit more
expensive here and the quality is probably somewhat better
too,
people probably just buy philips 'cause it's dutch

tibbar: err.. i'm not sure what you mean by 'hook that crap
up' ..

philips is very important in spain. the main building of
philips in madrid is in a very important place where all the
great companies are and the building itself is quite big
(not beautiful though) a friend of mine actually works there
in product quality department
we have a radio philips at home :D
I wouldn buy philips hi fi, but theuy do great cell phones
and also they are nice with TVs...

It's the build quality of Philips I dislike most. It
feels/looks cheap even if the picture/sound isn't too bad.
Buttons don't feel right when you press them. Plastic
faceplates look tacky etc.

you know they have some funny new inventions here

an infrared 'eye' for a mobile phone (at the side-edge)
instead of a wheel (like the sony j70) to scroll through the
menu, it just 'sees' the movements of your finger

they're also working on a 3D tv, like when something is on
the screen you can actually look past/behind it by moving
your head (reminded me of those movies where you have to
wear those special glasses) .. i think it'll take a long
while before this thing is all ready to get on the market..

it's interesting to hear about those things though

(i'm not if i was allowed to tell about these things.. :\
..well why the hell not)

howzabout aiwa toy?

Aiwa is less known here. Also I guess they only import cheap
Aiwa products to Nl as a lot of these portable radio systems
is just crap. But Aiwa does have quality products.

Philips is a wierd company, you buy their cheap stuff and it
is terrible, you buy their more expensive stuff and you get
real quality.

Also, i have alays thought of Philips as a poineer, lets not
forget they were joint developers of the CD with Sony.

Speaking of Philips, does anyone remember the Digital Audio
Cassette they released in the early 90's?

of course, i once had this baby. Great recording, great
digital quality.
DCC was quite expensive and rare... The minidisc was better
though.

Phillips played a very important role in todays mediums,
good to have a Phillips product around! They're built to
last, My old Phillips stereo in the garage is still running
strong after 20 years in constant operation!

Philips Hasselt to Philips Leuven.
