i know there is at least one family in finland living in the
futuro.. they only made bout 50 of those. about half of them
exist nowadays but i guess they are somewhere on display.
the futuro was designed to be housing for the next
generation, but it failed.. i'd love to have one :)

how did it fail? no funding? didnt catch on? it should
have... they look wonderful. a bit tiny, perhaps, but a
great first step towards something very cool.

I think we read about that in Design Technology class at A
level. I like the idea of something like that, perhaps if
they were a little bigger the would of taken off.

yeah, it would have to be constantly innovated upon, like
cars are every year. the technology you could apply to such
an idea is well worth endevoring upon, imho.

Something that has interested me since I was a child is the
idea of a modular house. You buy a plot of land with a
supply point (water, electricty and gas) which plug into
your inital pod- a bit like the futuro house. Some panels
could be removed to put stairwells/corridors in and you
could add modules. As you get wealthier there is no need to
buy another house, simply buy a new module for it. You could
even get tailored modules like a pool or walk in wardrobe
etc.

If it was adopted widely the notion of plannign permision
could be done away with- you would just have simple rules,
in this area no more than 3 pods high, 3 wide and 3 long
etc.

that's brilliant... why aren't YOU in charge of some
multi-billion dollar a year conglomerate?!?!? this is
brilliant... are you an architect, by chance? i know, is it
nacmat who is? i think so. wow. AWESOME idea... i would
totally live in one.

No I'm not an architect, but I do have a designer's streak
in me. I helped design a system for this famous
stadium. We won an award of innovation for it, but it
wasn't implemented as the construction company were already
well over budget (thanks Cardiff rugby club- your petty
stalling tactics cost Laing construction which ultimately
resulted in me going on an IT degree rather than a sponsered
Product Design one. You bastards :P)

Still we have the original prototype scale model of the
stadium at a mates house and we're going to sell it as welsh
rugby memmorbila on ebay in a few years time.

BTW some of my mates actually did get their roof opening
mechanism implemented. The gits.

I've seen this house IRL: Outside of Denver, CO USA It's actually
slowly sliding toward it's demise year after year down the
side of this mountain... pretty cool looking house, though;
It was used in the Woody Allen movie "Sleepwalker", and
parodied in the "Mecha Streisand" South Park episode.
