I've always steered away from hip hop, most of what I've
heeard has been quite lame, and I've been shown very little
to generate any interest in the genre, but I recently heard
DJ shadow's "Private Press" and was blown away, now I want
to score myself some more decent hip hop....

suggestions?

If you likes private press check out

prefuse 73 - vocal studies and uprock narritives

dj shadow - introducing

and this is hard to find but if you come across it pick up

presage - outer perimeter

there are a billion things i could suggest reall, but this
will probably get you off on the right track

Check out Bran Van 3000's first album ("Glee").
There's a lot to mention...
Two of my fav tracks are "Still Dre" (Snoop Dog & Dr Dre)
and Damn it feels good to be a gangsta (Get Boys)...
There's lot more to, but most new hiphop is boring if you
ask me.

DJ shadow EP's up for sale, It probably won't be there for
any longer than a couple of months, are there any essential
B-sides that I should grab before I miss the oppurtunity?

australia, they don't print it over here so I'd have to
order it in, could you recommend me a track to see what
they're like?

It really depends on what you want out of hip-hop. It looks
like you're leaning towards the sample-heavy instrumental
side, in which case your best bet is looking at Shadow,
RJD2, DJ Krush and anything produced by Dan the Automator
(including those mentioned above: Handsome Boy Modelling
School, Deltron, Dr Octagon and also Lovage featuring Mike
Patton on vox).

If you want some intelligent lyrics, check these titles to
start with:
Aesop Rock - Float
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
J-Live - The Best Part
Latyrx: The Album
Blackalicious: A2G EP (if you can get it)

These last two are part of Shadow's crew and he does some of
their beats.

Since you're in Australia, you should check some Australian
stuff. Dave and Katch from the Resin Dogs have two quite
good mainly instrumental CDs out under the name 2Dogz. They
are distributed by Virgin so shouldn't be too hard to find.
A guy out of Melbourne called Plutonic Lab has an excellent
instrumental album out as well. Also:

Lazy Grey - On or Off Tap (Brisbane)
Lyrical Commission's new CD, I think it's self-titled
(Melbourne)
Celsius - self titled (Sydney)

UK hip-hop is excellent and relatively easy to find in
Australia. Check for anything on the Lowlife label
(Braintax's Birofunk LP, Jehst's Return of the Drifter,
Taskforce's Voice of the Great Outdoors EP) and of course
Roots Manuva is a champ.

Creative Vibes has just picked up the rights to distribute
some Def Jux releases in Australia, including RJD2's Dead
Ringer, so you should be able to find it soon.

Refund, I told you before, you were totally right about
hip-hop from the beginning. It sucks, is complete crap, has
no artistic value, is not creative, is pointless, is stupid,
is for morons, is a lower form of music, is inferior to IDM,
etc. Please, don't take it all back now, you were so right
before.

This message also brought to you by Travis' campaign to
tell people what they want to hear.

i know no one listens to a word i say when it comes to
hip-hop because most of you prefer instrumental hip-hop or
white rappers, but i just want to reiterate that common's
last album (electric circus) is phenomenal and
something you would all enjoy for its electronics, hard
beats, intelligent lyrics, and (on half of the tracks)
ferocious raps. umm... at least download common's "soul
power" cos i'm listening to it now.

but before that it's good stuff.

three classics:

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions
Common - Resurrection
Nas - Illmatic

These are money top to bottom.

I agree on Unseen, excellent record. There's also
Yesterday's New Quintet, another of Madlib's alter-egos, a
sample-based jazz record which is patchy in parts but still
well worth getting, even if only for the liner notes.

NOT "another of Madlib's alter-egos." he's a producer
and frequent musical collaborator but it's an actual group.

Malik Flowers, Ahmad Miller, Joe McDuffey and Monk

=

Madlib

I promise. There's a lot of press sent out by Stones Throw
to create the illusion that this is an actual group, but
it's not.

admittedly, i underestimate madlib's contributions to YNQ..
i mean it is essentially him (as a producer and
multi-instrumentalist), but to say it's just madlib isn't
quite true.

IMO wanting some DJ Shadow-esque hip hop is like wanting
some Moby-esque IDM. He's good but he's missing an
essential component: the MC.

Here's some classic hip hop:
Mobb Deep - The Infamous
Talib Kweli & DJ Hi Tek - Reflection Eternal
Gang Starr - Hard To Earn
Common - Resurrection
Notorious BIG - Ready To Die
Nas - Illmatic
Outkast - ATLiens
Wu Tang Clan - 36 Chambers
GZA - Liquid Swords
Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
Souls of Mischief - '93 till infinity
