what are your favorite neil young songs and why?

"down by the river"
sweet, slightly atonal harmony, great soaring vocal melody,
badass riff, johnny cash style murder lyrics but more
eloquent and developed than johnny

"cortez the killer"
a slower, even more badass riff, lyrics also about a killer

"after the goldrush"
opposite end of the spectrum... sweet piano ballad with
great falsetto singing. very fun to sing this song.

"southern man"
scathing dis to the southern states that still rings true
today. this is the song lynard skynard replied to with their
ubiquitous "sweet home alabama".

"old man"
that banjo or mandolin just kills me everytime. another fun
song to sing.

"heart of gold"
probably the pinnacle neil young song.. what can i say about
it, perhaps the best song of the '70s.

"a man needs a maid"
it's true, innit? great moody blues "nights in white satin"
style orchestration.

"razor love"
a newjack neil young song but ranks up there with some of
his best love songs

A lot of Neil Young fans here!

''Needle and the Damage Done''
Heroin songs are always good for some reason.

''Piece of Crap''
Neil at his deep thinking best! A must hear.

I only have the album he did with pearl jam... it's quite
horrible. (titled Mirror Ball). I only bought it because of
the pearl jam-connection, but it made me lose interest in
Neil Young entirely.

Is his other stuff any better?

pearl jam will ruin anything! neil young has a real soft
spot for them though.

um, yea, pretty much any neil young album is better than
that one. download the songs mentioned in this thread and
then buy some albums (they're fairly inexpensive cos they're
mostly 40 minutes long).

Damn, I was hoping you wouldnt notice.

I hate explaining my feelings.. I think because when I do,
they cease to be feelings.. cease to be my
feelings at least.

Can't you just let me like the pretty songs and not steal my
feelings!?!

ahhhh.......well believe it or not i didn't like neil young
till i heard this ONE song that just broke my heart. i left
the theatre with tears streaming down my face and wondering
how i coulda overlooked him ALL THESE YEARS!!!

that song was "philadephia" - it was perfect for the movie,
set just the right tone of sadness and hope for a those left
living.....just amazing!!!

"old man" - reminds me of my boyfriend, first song i think i
really associated with him. the lyrics are priceless and
touching.

"heart of gold" - great title, great lyrics, and one of
those songs everyone seems to know and can sing along.
poignant!
definately one of my all time fav's and just thinking about
it i'm humming the tune.

"razor love" - amazing love song that again my BF told me
about. i downloaded the CORRECT version finally and love it.

"southern man" - i like this song just cos it's a good
song......recognizable and again very piognant lyrics!

what i'm asking myself NOW is why the hell i don't own a
NEIL YOUNG disc......i think i'll have to get one before
seeing him in concert this summer fo shure!!!

i was about to mention "philadelphia". what a song that is.
perfect for that movie.

powderfinger - something in the way he sings this and the
lyrics are just badass

theres an acoustic version of harvest moon played on SNL
thats sappy but i like it alot. works quite well with the
songs lyrics.
