idea to augment xltronic

One repeatedly cited problem is the volume of posts of a
typical boring chatroom nature. To fix this (to force people
to put thought, wit and art in their writing) limit each
member to, say, 1 topic starters and 8 replies per day. This
place could really be great in my opinion if threads changed
from being spur of the moment, to well thought out in, say
microsoft word, and then posted.

It should not matter if any writing is intended as
informative, humorous or deliberately pointless.

I don't like your idea.

impossible.

so you start a thread, a nice one... but 8 hours later you
want or need to post a new one, a new thread, it is very
important but you cant, cos you already started one....
sounds dificult...

absolutely fucking not, but I think you're just fooling
around, like Joyrex with that "message size lower limit"
suggestion ;D

You have to think differently from how it currently is. It
would operate differently but it would be better in my
opinion. One thing you should realize is that NOTHING is so
important that it can't wait for one day. (oh no I'm sick
and dying and have 23 hours to live. I wish I didn't make
that last post so I can waste my last bit of time doing what
I have ALWAYS wasted it doing... posting messages.. NOthing
is that important. People are born and die all the time
anyway which probably has nothing to do with the point
(which I forgot) Think about it. Relevent things in time
happen slowly as far as information regarding music is
concerned. And as far as other types of writing, they are
more fun to read and write when composed with thought and
time. Person A feels that something is so important that it
must be posted in HIS/HER opinion, but persons BCDEFG.. feel
the same way about different equally unimportant posts. My
idea will never happen, but so what. uuuummm... I forget
what else I was saying.

Our unhealthy mutual addiction could be toned down a notch.
AND we could have a better time for the shorter period of
time we spend here.

and of course another idea is coming up with a better name
than xltronic. It wouldn't be so stupid if it was just a
made up name. But how it tries to spell excellent in a
cryptic way is dumb. Sort of like what's written on the
alien's computer screen in maddox's new post (search for
best page in the universe in google)

For example, key secret would have to consider whether
his/her dislike for my idea was SO great that he/she would
be willing to sacrifice one of her 8 posts to express it.
The same for his/her idea that nacmat's point was good.
Elephant man would be a humorous character, but would only
be able to remind us of his hilarious lunacy 8 times a day.
Everyone tries to spread their own memes and get noticed and
accepted socially I guess.

I actually think this is not a bad idea - why not set up a
system where your seniority determines how many topics per
day you can create - if you've been here 1 month, you can
create 1 per day, etc. with a maximum of say 12 per day for
an established member. I don't think the number of posts
here is the probem, it's the number of topics - if there
were less topics, people could keep up with the flow of the
board better, enjoy it more, and ultimately raise the
quality of the topics.

good point that if my idea were to happen that the current
message size limit (how it cuts off your message if you
write too much) should be expanded to make room for the
extra thought put into individual messages. Not that it'll
ever happen..

some time passes, then the Saint Chopper is back. goto 10.

Joyrex's idea about seniority would be good and bad. People
like me would have rediculous amounts of posting power where
as people who are new wouldn't be able to ask much needed
question. There is always the search feature for that, but
thats a pain sometimes. Also it would again raise the
discrimination against the n00bs. I just think it would
solve one problem by vreating another.

yeah, a topic starting limit isnt a bad idea, it seems most
of the topics that are boring and pointless are started by
people who just start topics out of habit, because they are
bored..not because they have some important or interesting
issue to bring up.. it seems like the majority of threads
are started by a core group of compulsive thread starters
who start topics for the sake of starting topics...
disregarding any notion of 'interesting content' or
'usefulness'

it wouldnt bother me at all.. i seem to start one thread a
month at the most..

the post limit could be kinda annoying though..
if excess posting is an issue, you could always lenghten the
time allowed between posts.. like now, when you try and post
multiple posts within one minute, it tells you to slow
down.. maybe increase this to ten minutes or something?

this wouldnt work, but the idea i fond interesting. i post
a lot less often because most topics i find are shit
(personally).

i dont know if limiting the number of posts would work (i
doubt it), but something should be done to force people to
make more intelligent posts. i agree with that.

apart from banning people for shitty posts, which i find
exhausting for mods, i dont know any perfect solution...

i come here to post about music, idm, electronica, but most
topics arent about what im looking for. people will say
'fuck this, it's an open forum, i got opinions and nobody
has a right to regulate what i want and will say'. fuck
this way of thinking. this is first and foremost an
electronica messageboard. respect that.

maybe if it was specified that, by agreeing to become a
member of this community, you would have to somewhat
contribute to music discussion, it would avoid people
complaining about being banned for overposting unrelated
topics?

Or maybe it could be made so that every post has to be
checked first by a moderator before it actually gets
posted!

Or how about this: if you create an interesting topic you're
allowed to create another one. But if you create a useless
topic you're not allowed to create a new topic until the
next day.

Or maybe we should ban posting altogether, think about it...
it's the only way to insure for a 100% there will never be
any more unpleasant posts!

What's the point in having a messageboard if you can only
post X-amount per day - it renders pointless the ability to
have interesting discussions--this place is conversational
by nature, which makes it much better than the average
messageboard - this is why we call ourselves a community.

Well, I usually choose words that I think would make me
appear intelligent regardless of whether they are the most
fitting words. This is because I am a pseudointellectual.

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-03-30 00:16 [#00623627]

pseudo-intellectual eh? hehe..

"fitting words" sounds like a tricky proceduce!

i guess you could determine the "fitness" of words, and
establish the "fittest" as the ones that result in the most
pragmatic effects, (ie. in light of the intended meaning of
the "fitted" words). perhaps one would need to view words in
a more conglomerate vain (ie. most pragmatic
conglomerates).

this all seems to throw important light on the
"regardless of whether they are the most fitting
words"
aspect of "fitting".
