my friend has a video capture card in his pc, he has his VCR plugged into the card so that he can watch video's on his pc, and he is looking for software to record what is being played at the time, so that he can save it to avi/mpeg/divx etc...
so,
any ideas what programs I should use?

I'd say Virtual Dub. That's my favorite. A couple of tips for you, don't capture it into mpeg/divx. Capture it into a lossless codec (like Huffyuv) or an almost lossless (like a high quality setting of MJPEG) first, (it'll take up a lot of space), then recompress it. You'll get much higher quality. Well, I suppose it's possible that he might have enough proc power to compress in realtime, but I'd say this is the way to go. www.vcdhelp.com has a lot of good stuff on capturing.
