Peavey is okay for bass amps but I hate the choked sound of their guitar amps.
I'd say get a Marshall and have a tech hot-rod it.
I have an old Ampeg V7 that I need to have converted to use el-34 tubes... it uses 6550s and has the biggest clean sound you've ever heard - it's like a Fender twin's big brother - but the 6550s are expensive and fragile.
Is Howard Dumble still around? Lots of geetarists used to swear by his stuff. But he weighed about 450 pounds and is probably dead now... it's been a while since I read guitar magazines and kept up with this kind of stuff.
