I think only the 12" are limited. You look a bit dandy on
that pic Mr. F :)

Are you a hard-core Fennesz-fan by the way?

what do you mean by hard-core?

i have Endless Summer and Field Recordings, both of which
are Ffantastic... i'm currently into the more organic less
mechanised feel of things (Hrvatski's another flavour of the
moment).

Ae on vinyl = mmmmm.......

I just saw that you had ansvered my Mille Plateaux-thread.
Is Tilliander Fennesz-like? A friend told me that the M.P.
was more poppish. What about Hrvatski? Oval?

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-03-26 04:58 [#00617201]

Ah right.

Um.. from the Fennesz I've heard, I wouldn't really say its
the same as Andreas Tilliander. I think the guitar pretty
much sums up the difference.

Tilliander's "Ljud", as mentioned, I think is quite nice.
Its very minimal, and has some sort of tension in it. But it
almost solely uses 808 / samples of glitches, pops etc. with
minimal pads / bass line filling out the sound a bit. Its a
minimalism that seems to revolve around a drum-machine
(don't actually know how he makes his music, but that's what
it sort of feels like).

Oval, in some ways lie between Tilliander and Fennesz ..
they use predominantly if not exclusively glitches for
percussion, but their sound seems a bit more flowing/free
and not quite as staggered as Tillianders sound (which may
be due to the use of 808/909 BD's), also very minimal
though.

SOME Hrvatski is kind of reminiscent of Fennesz, if only
because he uses the guitar (sometimes). But he also tends to
break out in Jungle. Guitar and Jungle may seem like a
strange mix, but in this instance it works wonderfully imo.
The overall feel/approach to music is somewhat similar i
think, although Hrvatski tends to be more overt than
Fennesz.

so you quite taken by Fennesz then?

Yeah. I've got Endless Summer, Fennesx Plays and Hotel
Para.lel and was thinking of getting that Field Recordings
too. I've also got Jim O´Rourkes "I'm happy..." and was
thinking of getting the FennOBerg records. Whan I've heard
to much noisy music, Fennesz really gives me peace.

I'd advise caution approaching Hrvatski then :| or check out
Oiseaux 96-98, its a bit softer than Swarm + Dither.
Perhapse a cross between Venetian Snares and Fennesz (with a
bit of kid606 thrown in) is a more apt description. So dunno
if that's what you're looking for.

Also, Field Recording has its slightly heavier moments,
although tracks like Codeine make up for any of that. I have
Magic Sound of Fenno'berg - and think its grande, but i see
what you mean.

Oval will give you lots of peace - maybe a bit too much.
"Dok" isn't a bad place to start.

Fuck i sound like i work for a record company

What is the O'Rourke's album like?

I think O´Rourke sound a bit like Endless Summer. Relaxing,
but with an edge.

come on. gescom people.

oh, but just to add my $0.02 swarm & dither is essential for
everyone. I'm a little sceptical about getting Oiseaux as it
sounds like it could just be variations on a theme (that
theme being the amen break), without the inspiration of s&d.

GESCOM GESCOM GESCOM.

I got Oiseaux ages ago and absolutely loved it. Yes it
possibly is a tad narrow compared to swarm+dither ... BUT i
still think it is a wonderful album. Swarm+Dither eclipses
it though!

GESCOM GESCOM GESCOM

So .. who's rumoured to be behind ISS SA? I've heard Push
Button Objects .. but that is pretty unsubstantiated?

I have no idea. I don't know much about Push Button Objects,
but doesn't he make rather uninteresting stuff?

I've just reacently started to listen to this kind of music,
so I´m more in the asking phase :) But I guess there are
more of this stuff on Mego, allthough I'm not sure. But
check out the Norwegian band called Alog. Start with the
track "Islands of memory"

Yeah .. haven't heard any of his/her/their's stuff - but the
descriptions sound pretty wicked. From forcedexposure:

"As the title suggests, this is a twelve song compact
disc. it contains the critically acclaimed Cash EP, the more
recent Half-Dozen EP and two previously unreleased songs.
Push Button Objects is producer Edgar Farinas known to the
world for his new breed of Queens-style beats fused with
catchy melodies and challenging sound manipulation. The
Dirty Dozen CD is what you'd get if you combined A Tribe
Called Quest's fat beats, Autechre's mechanics, DJ
Premiere's dark hooks, and Herbie Hancock's funkadelics.
This CD captures the essence of Farinas' music as a
conceptual artist and his diversity in displaying emotions
in his songs."
