I've heared bits of 'the garden is full of metal' and it's fascinating stuff. Any must hear albums by scanner?

They r the guys that sample people's phone calls? (hence the name)
Some strange and atmospheric stuff.

Yeah that's right. I think it's just one guy. I like the track "mass observation"...
He's good mates with AFX apparently.

It's a one mans project by Robin Rimbaud. He's London based and has released a lot of stuff.
It's the guy who samples cell phones and everything else possible.
I knew him from his collaboration with DJ Spooky and some loose tracks but I like to discover him albumwise now. ;)

i know a few of his albums, and they all deviate a bit from each other.
'the garden...' one, which samples derek jarmon's voice, are the most impressive compositions to me.
other albums i've heard have a more percussion based, trance-like feeling.
saw him live about 2 years ago, and it was--- average, kind of tweeked, smoothed, out versions of typical industrial beats.
what i just missed was him doing a live soundtrack while they showed 'alphaville'.
i thought that would have been interesting, but the cost wasn't so nice.

I dl'ed what I could get on slsk (I already ordered 'Spore' @ the local recordshop. :) ).
It's a bit of voyeuristic music.

I like Scanner, though I'm missing a few recent releases. Does anyone have Scanner 2 from '93 that they fancy selling to me?

The early stuff, like Mass Observation (1) and before is mostly just ambience in the form of scanned conversations. After that he started to get more experimental with percussion and layering and stuff. So go for anything after 94 and you'll be happy.

"ambience in the form of scanned conversations" this sounds a lot to what dj spooky is doing

The description sounds more interesting than it is really. I find them good to listen to once in a while, but it's definitely not something I can listen to frequently. The later stuff is more easily revisited.
DaWeeze: yes, indeed *moves hands placatingly* but please calm down, you'll have an infarction, or a hernia or something! :D

If you want something that's mid way between early and later styles, check out Spore. "silver" is particularly nice, I reckon, and "rf radiation" is also v interesting
