Some of you think you're clever, some of you really ARE
clever -- others of you know you're stupid. But now you have
the chance to prove yourself. I'm going to set a little
problem. Phobiazero has confirmed the 1st person to supply
the correct answer will get 10 bonus points**

the problem
a teacher shares £2 among 20 school kids. Some kids get 5p,
some kids get 25p. How many children get 25p?

**Not really

a. why would a teacher share £2 between those kids in the
first place? Where's the educational value in that?

b. why not just give them al 10p? It seems really unfair to
give one kid more than the other. How is that supposed to
make the 5p-kids feel about themselves? :-p

nothing.

tis is rediculous

there's more than 1 answer...

but wtf, one possible answer could be that 4 get 25p and 20
get 5p

well, 6 kids 25p and five 5p to stick by the rules

all the same theres a lot of permutations cause you didnt
say you couldnt give some kids nothing.

Answer:
undefined...the answer can range from 2 to 18

Explanation:
some kids get 5p and some kids get 25p (kids = plural), so
there must be at least 2 kids who get 25p. On the other hand
there must be at least 2 kids who get 5p, hence the maximum
of 18 kids that get 25p.

I should have known some of you would think it was a trick
question!

Let X be the amount of children who 25p
(20-X)=the amount of kids who get 5p

25X+5(20-X)=200pence
25X+100-5X=200
20X=100
X=5

I 0p (25p) (5p) I

you did imply that the sets on 25p and 5p were mutually
exclusive but you didnt exlcude the set outside of 25p and
5p

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2003-03-22 07:40 [#00609200]

ok,
5 get 25
15 get 5
thats 2 pounds
and everyone gets it...

oh im happy but you didnt word the question well enough :)
id contest that in a math test and earn the whole class an
extra mark! 'some' doesnt mean the whole set has been
accounted for

Yeah, I was just putting as it was put in the textbook ;P So
blame the person who wrote that book :) I'm on the question
after that right now. A father is 4 times as old as his son.
In 4 years, he'll be 3 times as old. How old are they now?

Well, I haven't worked it out yet (my text book is at home),
but of course you can answer - I know the kid's age, because
I accidentally caught it whilst checking the answer of the
question before :|

Yes, that's right -- how did you work it out - I had y as
the kids age and some crap equation:

4y+4=3y, but since that gave a minus age I quickly abandoned
it and went into town to buy some books! :D

Oh, btw, for the textbook, you have to turn the questions
into algebraic formulas and work them out - rather than
going thru the ages until you get the right one! :D (I'm not
suggesting this is what you did, johnny :)...)

offline rockenjohnny from champagne socialism (Australia) on 2003-03-22 08:24 [#00609276]

oh well

x = 4y

x + 4 = 3(y + 4)

4y + 4 = 3y + 12

y = 8
