i guess they can both do it, now that i think about it. but a melody can be really stunningly beautiful more than any drum loop.

the fascinating thing about "idm" is that it brings into question what each of those terms REALLY MEANS... which is very VRY interesting to me.

depends what people focus on.. some people would lean more towards concentrating on beats... i know my girlfriend likes certain music based on the quality of the vocalist... and doesnt seem to focus much on the composition (or lack of in pop music)

rephlexual, what do you mean "not really?" have you educated yourself in music, or are you talking personal taste? you can't argue with musical science. twin's music agrees, pusher's music agrees, autechre's agrees... it just challenges things to open up to new levels. what's your grounds for this opinion?

Harmony. No matter what is used to achieve it.
PS there can be harmony in disharmony too

I like them both. With IDM is the border between rythm and melody very small. Melodies sounds rythmic, beats sounds melodic.

I'd say melody. But it depends on what kind of instrument or sound that makes the melody. Yup.

I see you mentioned harmony's earlier in this thread and so to complete the fact why IDM is so special, it should be something like 'melodic beats harmonizing with rythmic melodies'.
Strange, first thing that pop into mind with this description is Autechre.

Melody and harmony by a longshot for me... hell, my favorite kind of beat is a strait 4/4 there just to keep time. I'm from the ''Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts'' school of thought where the drummer is just there to hold down the fort most of the time and let the song do its thing.
