both...depends on my mood. I love SAW II but I can also
listen to personal discourse by VSnares very well.

i guess they can both do it, now that i think about it.
but a melody can be really stunningly beautiful more than
any drum loop.
roygbiv anyone?

melody+harmony+rhythm = music.

i'll take all three.

the fascinating thing about "idm" is that it brings into
question what each of those terms REALLY MEANS... which is
very VRY interesting to me.

melodies blow me away more [eg - brothomstates - kivesq] but
at times a really good beat will do it for me [eg - autechre
- sim gishel]

depends what people focus on.. some people would lean more
towards concentrating on beats... i know my girlfriend likes
certain music based on the quality of the vocalist... and
doesnt seem to focus much on the composition (or lack of in
pop music)

both plus harmony.

rephlexual, what do you mean "not really?" have you educated
yourself in music, or are you talking personal taste? you
can't argue with musical science. twin's music agrees,
pusher's music agrees, autechre's agrees... it just
challenges things to open up to new levels. what's your
grounds for this opinion?

Harmony. No matter what is used to achieve it.

PS there can be harmony in disharmony too

everyone stop trying to sound intellectual. you don't know
shit about music theory (me included).

always

nene: how would you know what anyone here does and doesn't
know? for the most part (not all), these are educated and
insightful individuals. don't deify people who are signed,
or something dumb like that.

I like them both.
With IDM is the border between rythm and melody very small.
Melodies sounds rythmic, beats sounds melodic.

offline AphexAcid from Sweden on 2003-03-22 08:52 [#00609361]

I'd say melody. But it depends on what kind of instrument or
sound that makes the melody. Yup.

to make which some obviously disagreed with.

acuse peeps who know a little bit of trying to be big, or
something.

I see you mentioned harmony's earlier in this thread and so
to complete the fact why IDM is so special, it should be
something like 'melodic beats harmonizing with rythmic
melodies'.
Strange, first thing that pop into mind with this
description is Autechre.

i've studied music for about 8 years now, through school and
now into college... but there is no key or answer to this
riddle its just how YOUR mind works.

yep, a balanced mix is essential.

a track with good beats is a good track.
a track with good melodies is a good track.
a track with good beats and good melodies is amazing :D

Melody and harmony by a longshot for me... hell, my favorite
kind of beat is a strait 4/4 there just to keep time. I'm
from the ''Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts'' school of thought
where the drummer is just there to hold down the fort most
of the time and let the song do its thing.
