I've picked up some good stuff lately:

Xiu Xiu - A Promise

Aislers Set - How I Learned To Write Backwards

The Postal Service - Give Up

Broken Social Scene - You Forget It In People

The Microphones - Mount Eerie

Mira Calix - Skimskitta

Songs Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co.

With the exception of the Mira, which I've head discussed
quite a bit on here, has anybody heard any of these? Can
anybody turn me on to something new given the albums I've
mentioned?

is Skimskitta all that good? I have like 3 mira calix CD's
and I don't really care for them all that much. Before
titworth tells me Im closed minded I was wondering if you
think it sounds different then her other stuff?

The Postal Service sounds interesting. I've never heard
it... can you do a review or add some comments on it or
something?

As for mira... i have skimskitta and one on one. Which are
nice if you want to mix it up a bit. Although I don't
frequent these albums all that much. Maybe now that it is
better outside i will listen to them while taking a walk in
the woods!

Yeah I know what you mean sometimes where you are, who your
with, or what is going on in life when you listen to an
album deeply influences how well you take to the record.
I really love your tracks by the way VirginPusher

ha! At least 5 other people do! :P

But seriously, I like to 'fish' sometimes. I've found a few
people here and there that listen to some anti-idm.

Found a handful of fanatical Will Oldham fans which was a
nice surprise.

You like Xiu Xiu? That's cool. I made a topic about them a
long time ago, I think, but no one really said anything.
Most people hate that guy Jamie's voice, but I love it.

i know, i was just playing.. but it's pretty disheartening
how closeminded most people here are to music outside of
warp and warp-style idm

I know what you mean, you would think people who listen to
warp would have open minds....but still you get people
bashing classical and classic rock. But just because
someone doesn't like a particular person does not really
mean they are closeminded its when they bag on something
they never try...or have no knowledge of. Peoples opinions
are always going to be different but I hate when someone
says "such and such sucks" for no damn reason

okay Ill shut up now

if you're waiting for me to apologize for what i said about
people here and mira calix's music, i'm not. get over it.

what i said above has nothing to do with gender, just
resistance to trying other types of music.

with what you said

I did not take offensive to it...so you get over it!!!

Yeah man, that guys voice is aweome! So fragile.. Like every
song was written 15 minutes after his grampa died or
something.

I can totally see why some people would be put off by his
voice though.

Someone sent me a tape that had a some songs by songs:ohia
on it... "nervous bride", "being in love" and "lioness". All
from the album "lioness" i think. I haven't been able to
find that one yet, but i loved those three songs :-) I must
remind myself to search for it next time i'm in a bigger
city.

"nervous bride" is awesome.. that's my favorite of the few
i've heard. the new album is supposed to be their first
balls out rock album.

Totally. It's like depression distilled.

Aphex Acid:

I'm no wordsmith, or record reviewer for that matter.. but
here's a brief rundown on the albums I listed.

Xiu Xiu - A Promise
[Imagine if Gary Numan made a new album after being kept
in a sensory deprivation chamber for a year and was taken
out every Wednesday to be physically abused]

Aislers Set - How I Learned To Write Backwards
[Like the music my mom listened to when she was a kid,
except it's been magically transported to the year 2003,
hitting scraps of punk that were floating in some temperal
tube along the way. Cheerful on the surface, but has
menacing undertones]

The Postal Service - Give Up
[Non-threatening pop-rock from a group of obvious HAB
fans (see: natural anthem)]

Broken Social Scene - You Forget It In People
[still checking it out... 'anthems for a seventeen year
old girl' is really interesting sounding..]

The Microphones - Mount Eerie
[acousto-ambient concept album.. real thick]

Mira Calix - Skimskitta
[I only got this cause its the dude from autechres wife..
heh]

Songs Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co
[nu country (heheh)]

to pomme de terre :

you sholud check this:

Dance Disaster Movement - We Are From Nowhere

Deerhoof - Apple O'

Hint Hint - Sex Is Everything

Interesting new bands which combine ultra funny rock (as
liars) and electronic...
also check the faint - danse macabre, but that's older....

Castanza:

The Lioness is on a split 7" with Scout Niblett.

Wow that song is so beautiful..
"whether you save me or whether you savage me, i want my
last look to be the moon in your eyes"

One totally sad day at my house was spent with that song on
repeat..

I Miss My Lion, the flip.. is also very good. Better
than the version that appeared on Scout Nibletts
full-length, Sweetheart Fever.. which I recommend picking up
if that's your style..
