Can they hell!
Very hard to master IMO.I've been practising for 2 months now,and i've got quite far.I know a lot of people find it hard, but I found it even harder, mainly becuase I don't really listen to guitar based muisc, apart from,Sigur Ros,Radiohead,Floyd ect.
But I found after learning the basics of guitaring,my musical tastes have changed. It brings a whole new light on music being able to create it yourself.
Has anyone else noticed learning to play a certain instrument can change the way you listen to things?

definitely!!! I used to only listen to punk back in the day (don't ask me why) after learning to play (to be in a punk band) I started listening to more complex stuff like Led Zeppelin which over the years lead me to Aphex somehow....I understand completely

Thats how I got into Floyd.
I actually appriciate good guitarists, like Clapton,or respect rather.
I've become rather open minded on the matter.

I learnt classical guitar but got so sick of it by the end that gave up listening to anything that remotely sounded like convential scales and chords etc for a long time..I fell into the arms of Sonic Youth and Noise...

I play about 0mins-5hours a day. I still can't get radioheads-lucky just right, but I can do much more compliacated stuff.
I was thinking of trying bass, but I haven't got that kind of rythm needed.
I play electric,but I can't play acoustic at all.Shame.

i was told to lean to play the accoustic first because its a lot harder to play, i.e., harder to dampen and fret the strings. and it turned out to be right.

I know i've done it the wrong way around. My guitar teacher even says so,and moans at me all the time.
I need to get a little faster at chord switching too,I focused to much on lead work.
Actually I think i'm off to practise now.

Nah. Piano dude here. Never liked those campfire dudes i know and hate. kind of put me off guitar! But i know some real talented guys, but they all play metal! is it like that or what? The technically best guitar players are drawn to metal? hmm. anyway, i personally feel that my piano lessons have given me a lot of understanding of music, and that has brought more appreciation with it too! (well, also basic knowledge of music theory, note reading and so on.)
So nothing wrong with learning something! it wont destroy you.

Most good guitarists are drawn to metal 'coz thats were the moneys at.
Theres not alot of money in classical, but I know there are people out there who don't play guitar professionally(band) who are exellent artists.
Same as most instruments/genres I suppose.

I took lessons for 3 years, but I was the worst student... I'd never bother to learn scales or notes, or how to read... most of the time I just went there and jammed with my instructor. I might not have put any effort into learning, but it was alright with him because we were both into the same shit, wheras most of his other students were tools that wanted to learn how to play Green Day or Blink 182. Anyone truly CAN play guitar if they just want to play some of that stuff.
