first i heard was Head Like A Hole (first track off the first album, Pretty Hate Machine)... old but good.
not that representative though.
The Downward Spiral and The Fragile needed more time for me to get into, but i was still young and musically ignorant so... : )
maybe if you have an autosearch on your p2p program, you can try to put some of these... (one by period maybe)
· Terrible Lie (live versions are much better) · Something I Can Never Have (sad, beautiful, quiet) · Sin (very danceable cool PHM-era track) · Ringfinger (maybe the best of the period, still sounding a bit 80's)
· Wish · Gave Up (both off the 'Broken' EP... more violent, very good)
· Mr. Self Destruct (quite violent, except a quiet pause in-between)
· Closer (the classic NIN track, with the "fuck you like an animal lyrics"... not the best but still the best-known)
· Ruiner (more electronic sounding, but with also a guitar solo i like very much, a just sublime melody in the chorus... this track is near perfection)
· The Becoming (you have to hear this one. it's a bit disturbing, with Trent's beautiful warm voice, like trying to keep his calm in a very weird machine / environment... with screams on the background... the final line, "it won't give up it wants me dead and goddamn this noise inside my head", whispered all over the end... a bit hard to describe but i would highly recommend it)
· Hurt (Trent's favorite, at least it seems so. classic NIN song.)
· We're In This Together Now · Please (both straightforward but very good songs off The Fragile) · Somewhat Damaged · Even Deeper · The Great Below (one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful...)
· Where Is Everybody? · Ripe (with decay) (very nice instrumental)
+ some non-album tracks i like very much: · And All That Could Have Been · Dead Souls (Joy Division cover) · The Perfect Drug (more drum'n'bass, not caracteristic at all of NIN but great)
· Closer To God (a remix of Closer, better than the original imo)
plus y

the downward spiral - seconded
although i really think if i listened to nin for the first time today, it wouldn't even approach the impact it had on me when i was in grade school...
I'm still a huge fan, just... i've discovered so much since then...
also, check out Prick ... it's by Trent's musical pappy, Kevin McMahon, and I personally have decided that it surpasses nine inch nails.

well i started with the downward spiral, and that worked for me :-)
I remember when i first got it, my parents were having a new kitchen installed. So there were all these people working in and around our house (drilling and hammering and whatnot).
And i *tried* to listen to the cd, but i could hardly hear anything because of all the noise they were making, so i turned it of after the first song...
...when i listened to it again later that day i realised the noise was a part of the first song ;-) I wasn't used to much in those days :-p
Some of my favourite tracks:
mr self destruct (that first song) wish closer we're in this together the great below piggy hurt the perfect drug!! (excellent song!)
too many great songs... i strongly recommend listening to a whole album instead of just a few songs though.

oh yeah... mr. self destruct was so new to me... i was laying in the back of a car listening to it on headphones and that ending part started kicking in, and i sat up and looked out the windows to see if it was raining really hard or something, and then i took off my headphones and realized it was part of the music... i went "whoa, that is the coolest thing ever."

That's so kooky... do you have a copy of the tape of that show? I really enjoyed that... I was the guy all in black with a ponytail who was bugging richard after the show...
actually, speaking of which, I asked him about his work with nine inch nails that night.
I was just in town for godspeed you black emperor the other day, that was a much bigger show. I'm trying to get back to see sigur ros on the 27th, but i'm having a bitch of a time finding a ride, sadly.

richard devine's live show was a kinda mishmash of ambient creepy electronic noises, his albums are sometimes like that, and sometimes feel like a marching band made of complex machinery... he's really good, studied classically for a really long time to grow up and make noise, which i found to be a refreshing thing. He hasn't actually worked with trent yet, but he's waiting on a callback from trent to go into the studio and kinda give the new nin work a fresh feel... i told him i was glad he was going to work with trent because i thought he could liven up trent's work some :P

NIN was good when I was a depressed teenager, but now I find it impossible to take Trent seriously. I mean c'mon, the guy complains about how horrible his life is in nearly every song... and yet he's a millionaire, rich and famous, what the fuck does he have to complain about?

the reason his lyrics are the way they are, is because of the music's style and the way Trent's singing style goes....
try to take the music of "Mr. Self Destruct" or "Hurt", or any other song and combine with lyrics about pretty flowers and diamond rings, and it just doesn't work out....
--but any way...
I would recommend, no, I would command you to listen to all of The Downward Spiral. NOW!
Then listen to Further Down the Spiral. Then listen as NIN blossoms in The Fragile. Then go back to the PHM-era or the Broken-interim and it just gets better.
My FAVORITE songs are:
Terrible Lie (PHM) Something I Can Never Have (PHM) Wish (Broken) Help Me I'm In Hell (Broken) Screaming Slave (Fixed) A Warm Place (TDS) Reptile (TDS) Eraser (TDS) The Downward Spiral (FDTS) Eraser (Quiet) (FDTS) At The Heart of It All (FDTS) The Beauty of Being Numb (FDTS) La Mer (The Fragile) The Great Below (The Fragile) The Way Out Is Through (The Fragile) The Mark Has Been Made (The Fragile) The Big Come Down (The Fragile) Leaving Hope (on Still CD) And All That Could Have Been (Still CD)
...whew.....
deep breaths....

One should really listen to Pretty Hate Machine. It's the first album and the beginning of all the goodness. It was released in 89' so it sounds a bit aged, but it doesn't affect it's listenability. It's got a "I'm pissed off at god" theme going for it. Especially track 2.
Broken sounds pretty Garage band-ish. But thats what it was supposed to sound like. Fixed is remixes of broken.
There are 4 core NIN albums and the rest are remixes revolving around them.
PHM Broken TDS The Fragile
The rest are remixes.
