I'm always strucked by the warmth of this album. Anybody an
idea of what gear RDJ was using making this record?
I find it strange that his gear is not mentioned more here.
A lot of people are so fanatic into AFX and do some music
themselves and I never saw popup a question how he creates
his sounds and tracks.

He said he doesn't use it anymore- he heard "normal" people
talking about it in a pub and went right off it after that.

i think he made saw2 around the time he was still using
custom modifided hardware.. so no one knows exactly..
even now that he uses software, most of it is either created
or modified by himself

musicians in this genre especially, seem to be guarded about
the equipment they use..which is understandable..they'd
rather people focus on the music they make as opposed to
what they made it with..that, and there are so many
gearhound kids out there eager to snag their sound

It keeps a part of the mystery alive. ;)
I can understand why they be guarded about their gear. It's
just curiosity how he managed to get those beautiful sounds.

Peep the article over at watmm:

The point came about two years ago when I was in a pub in
London and overheard these three boys who were football
fans. They were half drunk, had shirts and ties on, and they
were talking about Cubase. I heard their conversation and I
thought, "What the fuck is going on?" When I started using
Cubase no one had ever heard of it. Now I was standing next
to these people and it did my head in. I thought, "I'll
never use that again!"

Anti-populist as ever.

Well, look at Autechre. They're more of an enigma like
Boards of Canada, where the music takes pride and place
rather than the musicians. I think that the quiet young
guns of Warp Records are taking over, while the apparent big
names of Aphex and Squarepusher are faulting and are not
pushing boundaries. Drukqs was classic Aphex, yet nothing
new and nothing spectacular. Do You Know Squarepusher was
an album that felt like it was made up of songs left in his
studio. I reckon Autechre are always pushing into new
directions sonically. I might sound like I am contradicting
myself here, and while I may well be, but when you look at
Boards, you find yourself comforted by their trademark
fuzziness. Their mellow and warm music rolling around like
melted caramel. You can never get sick of something like
that. As far as the big guys go, I'd rather listen to
something revolutoinary or something that is a trademark by
diversity.

"I'm always strucked by the warmth of this album."

I think most of the tracks has a quite scary sound.

saw II holds a whole bandwith of feelings... its like a
bible to me

what i liked most about his music in the beginning was that
his sound is so clear and deep, if you know what i mean,
as if he used some special kind of stereo-filter like a
unknown THX-sound or so.
at that time i thought i could recognize any song (no matter
what the genre is)
and say its aphex just by the special clear sound...

anybody had the same experience?

yes. i totally agree with you.
rhubarb and lichen are so crisp they make my ear drums
weep.

one exception may be Caustic Window stuff. (?)

caustic window is indeed a bit dirtier,
i didnt think of that, but at that time when i build up that
sound-theory i wasnt into that stuff very much.

now i have a mixed-md with caustic compilation vs analogue
bubblebath3,
bad ass!!!

nice!!
.087180L i think it is.

that one with the weird sounding German Nazi in the
background and then the trash compactor beats come in.
I love that.
And the untitled 0:35 second smash you in the brain track.

Thx for the link, martinhm.

SAW II covers a whole range of feelings but with a warm,
smooth overlay what makes it so brilliant.

i wanted to mix up .087180L and .087180R until i found out
that they are on the same plate, arrhgh

mixing caustic window and ab3 is very satisfying, i tried
with traktor too and it gets better and better...

i want more saw2, because i fear the moment in time when the
songs start to bore me... ( i go to sleep to either one of
this cd´s everyday for months)

yeah dude...
falling asleep to white blur 2 allows me to travel through
distant black holes...and meet new aquaintances on Planet
Aphex.

Perhaps he means the quality of the sounds- fuzzy and
crackly rather than cold and crisp like digital/"bright"
sound?

Things can be dark and warm, look at Geogaddi ;)
