god, druqks is so underrated..
I've recently been listening to a lot of these tracks separately .. and while I've always loved "mt. st. michel+st. michels mount mix" and "vordhosbn" and many of the prepared piano pieces ..the first one, avril 14th, kesson dalef etc.. all of them are growing on me, even though I liked them to begin with..
but recently I've come to appreciate some other tracks I've been overlooking.. like "ziggomatic" which is absolutely beautiful (esp. the end - thanks corngrower) and "meltphace 6" (which I've always liked, I just listen to more now) and "taking control" (featuring his parents on vocals?! the first time I've noticed this).. I love the warm yet cold feel to this album (I got it in winter.. again with the state-dependency aphex bias) so it can be described as being in the warmth, while it's bitter cold outside.. I dont think this album deserved the negative press it received.. I know a lot of the acoustic pieces sound like the score to bad prefomance art, but it's all done very well.. it's acoustic aphex twin.. and I think it does translate well...

My favorite part about Drukqs is the sleeve artwork. Is he playing that thing on 'Jynweythek'?

must have been a lot of strange expactations, which made it appear bad.
he didnt release anything for a very long time and the new stuff really differs.
i got into his music with "come to daddy" and "richard d james album", loved the breaky stuff and the strange samples and his arrangement of song structure.
thinking of that you may guess why I have not been disappointed of drukqs at any time...
before it came out, i prayed that there may be some faster dnb stuff on it.
(ive been overwhelmed) shortly before i discovered squarepusher and i must say that drukqs really topped everything i heard to that point!
the only thing i didnt like at first was the piano... ( i mean if you compare it to his other ambient pieces, they dont stand there very solid, though their feeling is good.)

Drukqs IS a masterpiece!
Ziggomatic v17 itself is a masterpiece! All the prepared piano tracks were programmed into his computer and he never played one instrument on any of them,
and they sound gorgeous! That album is SO underrated. If everyone in the world listened to Penty Harmonium, the world would be a better place, I tell you!

I'm sure he played some parts of the piano pieces, you can hear the pedals being pressed every now and then.. then again that may be programmable on that shnazzy piano of his
drukqs was just a surprise on so many levels, after his most technically complex and textured electronic accomplishment ,windowlicker.. (I think many were expecting the windowlicker Lp) he does a 180 and produces a half acoustic album ..the sounds produced are much different from other albums/tracks but if this were another album the clanky/chimey piano would simply be replaced by the compu-noise of days passed (and days to come, of course) the instrumentation, not the technique, changed .. only for less than half of an album .. as far as technique is concerned, though, some changes were necessary, and were made so as to better fit the aesthetic of working with different acoustic instruments
I find this quote to be partcularly irksome:
But Drukqs showcases Aphex's crude instrumental contemplations to a fault. His production talents have their bounds, and they wear a little thin when he dons the mantle of artistic maturity, attempting to imitate Erik Satie... These languid noodlings comprise over half of the album; take them away and the cracks begin to show in Drukqs' monumental 30-song promise. In the end, with all the filler, this monster packs a lot less punch than some of Aphex's shorter releases, like the legendary Selected Ambient Works 85-92, or the Hangable Auto Bulb EPs.
from the Pitchfork review of Drukqs

take them away and the cracks begin to show?? well those pieces were intended, obviously, to be a part of this drukqs package, they werent interfacial gap-fillers subsequently added to a formerly/otherwise weak album in order to make it stronger. that's like saying "take the witty dialogue and all speaking roles out of pulp fiction, and you have one reaaal feeble screenplay" although, granted, music in a similar vein to the "breif melodic noodlings" of this album HAVE been done before, but when an artist almost synonymous with glitchy-electro mindfuck techno music takes a bold turn in this kind of a direction ("equation" and "Avril 14th" are by the same artist!?) you can't make a statement that discredits the said turn like that ..it's rediculous to imagine this album without those acoustic pieces.. they became the album and are almost the reason for it at all ..

and since when have albums been prescribed a "promise" or an assumed standard of quality based on how many songs are on the album??
and finally.. of course an experiment like drukqs wont be as strong as something like SAW85 especially considering it (SAW) is an ANTHOLOGY.. a veritable "greatest hits" from over seven years of work..

re: drukqs
the problem with a review is that is doesnt allow for any change of opinion. i thought it was pretty average 1st couple of listens, now i think its his best album. i love it.
