As some of you know, I'll be moving from the "United"
"Kingdom" to the United States of America. I want to watch
UK shows by buying the DVDs, but I need to know if these UK
DVDs will play on US players? :)

You can get a multi-region dvd player which will allow for
playing Region 2 UK dvds. I believer a company called Apex
makes them. They're not very expensive.

Yeah, when I met my wife, she was only 16 - so shagging her
one night on the bleachers of the school football field
freaked me out a little.

Yeah just get a dvd player which has a multi region
capacity, you can find out which players have them by going
to a dvd website. I had to enter a code for mine and it
plays everything.

Be careful. Almost all European players will convert the
NTSC (USA/Japan) signal for playback on a PAL TV, but most
US players will not do the reverse (typical). So check
vcdhelp.com to make sure you have the right kind of player.
I have a Philips 724 and it plays European and Japanese DVDs
very well right out of the box.

Buy one in this country that plays multi region and then use
a power converter. That's probably the best option.

why aren't the dvd players the same format? i don't
understand why there needs to be a difference.

It's not the DVD player, it's the television standard. It's
historical...DVDs did add the stupid region lock though.

Because European govt.s are ****ers and like to tax us
through the nose for anything we wouldn't die without. We'd
just by our DVDs from USA/turkey etc. otherwise...

Oh and it helps lets them ban films in certain
countries/areas too.

What the Whale said. The US is on NTSC format which is
slightly inferior to PAL. So in theory the UK release should
be a better picture quality although it's only noticeable on
a top of the range TV. The regions thing was for DVD and it
licks balls. They've tried to combat peope importing with a
new coding bit that's easy to bypass too. Region 1 is
America, Region 2 is UK, Region 3 is ????, Region 4 is
Australia, Region 5 is Russia I think, Region 6 China. I'm
not sure on those. Oh and Space is Region 1. I kid you not.

and so another reason they make the regions different is so
you can't order from the u.s. and recieve cheaper tax?

Yeah, my brother suggested buying a DVD player here in the
UK and getting an adaptor for it - I'll check out some sites
nearer to the time to see what gives :) Thanks for the help
all.
