First Aphex Experience

I know this is an old topic idea, but, what the hell.
The first time i saw/ heard aphex twin was on an mtv show
called twelve angry viewers. they aired the come to daddy
video and then had a group of people "review" it, which was
funny. all of the men loved it and all of the women were
practically curled up in corners crying. i hated the song
but liked the video, and then like a week later found SAW
vol 2 and bought it. loved that right away.

it's come to daddy vid, on vid and saw1. can't really
remember which was first since they were introduced to me
almost the same time.

I first heard aphex twin via the Richard D. James album. It
was so weird, so unlike anything I had heard before. I fell
in love immediately and have been hooked ever since.

ME TOO!!

except I might have seen it once or twice before that
show... and I might have bought mtv's amp cd before that..
but probably not...I also watched that show all the time so
I might've seen aphex w/o realizing it (possibly 'On'?)...
my first aphex purchase was Windowlicker

my brother told me about the 'see the light tour' and
mentioned his name.

i went out looking for it and picked up a CD titled Analog
Bubblebath.

this was i believe in 1992.

listened to Bucephalus Bouncing Balls and was stunned.
Bought the CD the next day and it still sounded good.

i seem to remember my first experience with afx being the
video for come to daddy.. i think it came on mtv "after
hours" one night (you know, back in the Dark Ages when they
still played videos for the majority of their broadcast
day).. after that i bought literally every CD i saw by RDJ..
i think i got CtD first, then ICBYD and the RDJ album at the
same time, then SAW2 (which i didn't like at first but which
has grown on me to a point that i listen to it every night
while i sleep (i have a three disc changer and i alternate
between disc 1 and disc 2 in the third slot.. so the
soundtrack to my dreams is always saw2 ^_^ )

and incredibly, i still don't have all of his releases :-P

I remember seeing the on video on mtv way back when I still
listened to rap music (Yuck) in 93 or 94. Then I bought
SAWII some few months later since I couldn't remember what
album the song was on. Now I own nearly 30 AFX releases.

oh yeah, the further down the spiral track "At The Heart Of
It All" was actually my first exposure, but I didn' know it
was AFX until I read the liner notes a long time after I
bought SAWII cause I noticed some similarities.

"Didgeridoo" when I was younger.
Later heard and saw "On" on Mtv.

First experience was probably seeing Windowlicker on MTV and
thinking what the fuck???
First experience that lead to getting into him would be via
the film Pi which opened me to Autechre, then a few months
later I decided to have a look at aphex after hearing some
stuff from SAW1 and ICBYD. I became hooked rapidly!!

and he was screaming :"man you got to see it!!!!!!!". and
fuck i saw that... 1,2,3,4,5,6,50 times in a row!!!!! than
we said "that aphex is a genius!!!!!!". and i have started
to look for his stuff... and i found a shop that had saw2
on stock!!! man i hated saw 2 at the beginig! i just thought
"where the fuck is that ultra fast beat???". but i
discovered magic of that record after few weeks! and now i
own about 20 orginal albums (and a lot of cd-r`s)of mr.afx!!
maybe it`s not impressive collection but try to buy them in
Poland!!!!

i bought afx ab1 used on cd at this record store that sold
mostly rock. iremember i talked they guy down to $2 because
i pointed out it only had 4 tracks.

i used to tape WNYU's digilution show on wednesdays, even
though the sound quality was crap. i guess it was when
ICBYD came out that they played acrid avid. it was
beautiful.
when i got the album, i had never heard a collection of
songs that i felt such a wide range of emotions through.
while it was so different from ab1 there was something there
that i knew must be the same person doing them both.

later that year i saw him when he toured with bjork, so that
was the first live aphex. it was great becuase he dj'ed
behind a curtain or something, so still all i had as far as
appearance was that sinster portrait.

For me it started may '95 when I bought classics. Bought it
- listened it nonstop for a day - put it away for a week and
then listened to it EVERY DAY on my way to school, in
school, on my way home, at home for about a week.
I taped it for a few of my friends who have ruined the
vacation of many 'sjonnies' and 'anitas' in France by
playing it real loud in the morning on a campsite filled
with hangover kids.
Ever since I listen a minimum of one RDJ product a week.
Though it never got to become ebayism for me...

my first exposure was to Flaphead on the Digeridoo E.P in
about '92 (Flaphead is still my fave track ever!), then
rpgress to buying more vinyl including Digeridoo, Xylem
Tube, AB1-4, Madreporic Plate etc....

First saw him live about 7 years later in 99 at the Finsbury
Park festival where he played tracks from the Donkey Rhubarb
era (while sitting in a wendy house with the cuddly bears
fighting on stage - classic!!)

it was a biblical experience :))

Mmm the first time I heard Aphex Twin was in the early
summer of '94, it would be probably have been late May or
early June. I knew about Aphex Twin before that just because
his name was mentioned often in the musical press and he
seemed to have a sort of presence. Can't say at that time
though that he stood out above other electronic artists
necessarily because I'd never heard his music. At that time
I was listening to the Orb and mainly Sun Electric which
were on R&S and other stuff like Eat Static. I was into the
Megadog scene and I noticed that Aphex Twin was playing at a
few Megadog raves in the NME. So I guess thats probably how
I became aware of him.

The actual track I heard was Polygon Window's 'My Teapot'
which was on a Select Magazine tape and it also had an
excellent Seefeel track. And I guess thinking back I was
more impressed with Seefeel than Aphex at the time.

Then after the school term, I sold a bunch of CDs at the Buy
and Sell in Camden and then as I recall I bought the first
Seefeel record on CD. And at around the same time I
persuaded my sister to buy SAWII as a secondhand tape. That
was when I got serious exposure to Aphex Twin.

first aphex experience: about 2 years ago, I used to be into
Fluke's album Risotto before idm/braindance/whatever. On AG
(*sigh*) there used to be "other users listened to:"-links
on top of each page, so I downloaded a bunch of MP3's by
aphex. Digeridoo, Girl/boy song, peek 824545201 and a few
others. At first I thought it was all Casio crap, but soon
they started to grow on me and the rest is history....
