where do all these idm artists get their name from? i know
boc are named after some canadian film series and the 'twin'
in aphex twin is for his dead brother...but what about the
rest? squarepusher, autechre, lfo etc etc strange names, any
reason behind them?

"squarepusher" reminds me of the Sokoban puzzlegame where
you have to push boxes to get to the exit

"LFO" = low frequency oscillator I think...

Autechre say that the name Autechre is just made up, they
just liked how it sounded, so they kept it. That's why they
say you can say it howeverr you like.

Squarepusher always gave me the mental image of a ZX
Spectrum 8 bit blocky guy pushing a block. I'm sure I've
seen this on one of the games I have.

squarepushers name always made me think of him pushing
squares in a program (ala frootyloops) to make his music

Yes, I used to think that and also a drug dealer who sells
lsd tabs (squares).

He said in an interview it was just made up.

i mentioned before "squarepusher" is a slang term in Ulysess
refering to a well-to-do gentleman who checks out womens
behinds. Also, i read an interview where Tom likes reading
philosophical shit like that so maybe he got it from
there....... i suspect he though of it independently though,
refering to all the puishing of chunky hardware buttons he
does to create the tunes, although in fact i´say back in
the day it was more knobtwiddling - but that sounds ca-ca.
my own name has not too disimalr roots!

He he, your name sounds like a pianist who has been on the
rum and keeps missing notes and sounding cacaphonys :)

offline KEYFUMBLER from DUBLIN (Ireland) on 2003-02-26 05:05 [#00571407]

aphex is a music-hardware maker. possibly RDJ´s first
analogue synth was an "aphex" xyz type thing.

i like "phoenecia"..... a ceramaic i beleive, and "Venetian
Snares" is catchy and you can extrapolate where that came
from.

CeriJC.... You know the stroy!

LFO, low frequency oscillator, is what you use on your synth
when you want to modulate something with a nice slow (below
audible mostly) waveform. umm... apex is a word, maybe aphex
is apex with an "h" :)
i don't think the aphex company has made a synth, ever.
though they make other stuff which maybe he used :)
mira calix sounds like miraculix from asterix.

a-(acid) pH-(as in acid rate) ex- just a way to end the

i thought Squarepusher was to do with fitting a square peg
in to a round hole.

and Phoenicia is an area of ancient Isreal, i think

architecture"...

I thought I read somewhere that Autechre was an abbreviation
of "Automated Technical Re...something or other"

I'll have to see if I can dig that up.

Sorry, that was "Aural Technology Redefined" from an ancient
interview. But they've said since that it doesn't mean
anything so who knows.
