I really like it... and especially also the :-) ;-) :-D :-p :-( little faces!
It's kind of exciting too... for the first time in hundreds of years this is actually a completely new element in the written language. I think there are many artists who tried to create something like that (new letters to the alphabet and such, or things to express emotions in written text) and now with the internet it just created itself :-) You've got to love that! I do! :-D

It's a danger to our society. Have you never read 1984? We are bastardizing the language to make us less articulate. Less articulate=less intelligent=less questioning. Newspeak. It's double plus bad. I'll never use it.

You're kind of right about it making us less articulate... i must agree with you there. It's especially sad to see kids grow up with this... and they will never learn to write properly without smileys.
But still... to say that it also makes us less intelligent is kind of a huge leap! I don't think this has even been researched. You saying that is based on nothing, expect your own paranoia.

Maybe I don't get the whole point but why should it be considered less articulate? In addition to normal use of language, it adds something. It gives a view of how someone is feeling while writing a post. We don't have bodylanguage on the board and I think they are also good to avoid misunderstandings.

Yeah, but a very articulate person would be able to express in his words how he feels, and wouldn't need smileys to communicate this...

I agree but imagine that we explain in every post, put in beautiful and clear words, the feeling we want to express. They're gonne be a lot of long messages out there and most people like it short and to the point.
But I'm also worried about the kids growing up with this kind of language. Maybe it's just an evolution in the computer era which make us the last generation in tradional language.

"most people like it short and to the point."
Exactly! :-) That is ofcourse also how smileys and things like lol, lmao were invented in the first place... the internet is fast, people want to talk fast. Short and to the point.
But when i write a longer e-mail (let alone a real letter) i try not to use them smileys... when you've got the time and space for it, i say write as much and beautiful as possible ;-)
But for places like this... i'm still a huge fan of smileys! I do not know what the future will bring... but i do think it's exciting to be here and witness all these changes happening to language.

The most annoying things for me are:
"Would of" as in "I would of gone if I could get me grammar straight."
Now if you shorten "Would have" it SURE AS HELL DOESN*T TURN INTO "OF"!! YOU FUCKING CUNTS!
..alright, so the correct way is "Would've" as in "I would've gone, but there is no hope of ever getting this across to enough people."
Same applies for "Should've".

i have to agree with bill_hicks. the more we compress our thoughts, and the more we compress the tools that allow expression of thought, the less we think.
it probably doesn't make a significant difference at this point, but it's the trend that counts. if it continues to roll language into a smaller package, inevitably we'll have less to express ourselves with, and then less reason to do so.
