I was lucky enough to get my hands on a promo cassette copy of Autechre's newest lp, Draft 7.30, and decided to write some words about it for all you fans.
Sorry if it's a little long.
Well, this album is amazing. Nothing less, alot more. How does it sound? Well, kind of a mix between gantz graf, lp 5 and confield.
It's a lot more ambient and less glitchy(yet glitchy enough in places), it's kind of organic like confield, yet it has alot of 'mechanical' sounds.
Instead of seperating the beat from the melody and bass, all these blend into eachother, creating kind of 'musical creatures' with more atmosphere and soul than anything they've ever done.
'Xylin Room' opens with woodblocks or something chopping at eachother to make a beat, then a
radiostatic type sound comes in. Several more sounds come in, including bubbly synths and glassy samples, all blending into eachother nicely.
About halfway through it changes though, a really nice synth comes in with a melody, and it catches you by surprise.
All in all a great start on the album, well done.
'IV VV IV VV VIII' starts with an ambient synth and then all hell breaks lose and 'pen expers' type percussion enters.
What seperates this from pen expers though, is the melody and atmosphere you get while listening to it.
A wobbly bass fades in and out, and something that sounds like an alien talking or hissing comes in and out.
Excellent but not my fave.
'6ie.cr' is funky as hell. And a really abrasive synthline runs the show over funky percussion before halfway through a nice melody pad comes in and fades out slowly to it's melodic conclusion.
Great track, but probably one of the weaker ones on the album.
'Tapr' reminded me of bine right away. It starts with the same moody synth pad line, there's some fast beat brooding way down and it all sounds ace.
But instead of going almost all percussion like bine, the beat stays low, and they bring in some woody clicks, and brooding synths and it keeps on like that for 3 mins.

second part: This is excellent, one that I find myself playing over and over.
'Surripere' is an 11 minute long masterpiece. Like this whole album, it kind of reminds me of 'the Matrix'. Futuristic and dark.
A steady beat holds it together and synth pads glide in and out for 5 mins before some abrasive percussion comes in and provides some great subtleties.
It ends fantastically in abrasive percussion and nice synth pads.
'Theme of sudden roundabout' starts with an irregular rhythm and hollow flute sounds before morphing into an amazing beat and melody with the usual glitches.
It's a good track, but not my favorite.
'VL AL' is just incredible. It starts with a really nice hollow beat and soon some moody synths and a dark bass joins in to create one of the moodiest tracks on the album.
Simply stunning.
'P:Ntil' is in my mind one of the best tracks on the album. It's funky, the beat is fairly coherent, and the melodies and atmosphere of it is just amazing.
It kind of reminded me of an old 70's show, all fucked up with glitchy percussion and nice sounds.
And what do I hear halfway in? A long melody that's actually harmonic? Wow.
Simply amazing.
'V-Proc' has an actual melody too. It sounds like an MTV commercial for 10 seconds before the funkiest rhyhm comes in and a sea of glitches and pops join to create one of the best on the album.
'Reniform plus' the last track on the album, is nearly 8 mins long and is kind of seperated into 2 parts. The first part sounds like acroyear 2, the second part gets more abrasive with percussive elements and the usual pads and sounds.
Not that that's a bad thing, oh no, it's one of the best on the album.
It's clear that they've really done it this time. They've blended their earlier stuff with their newer glitchy stuff in such a way that you can't seperate the two.
As for the sound design part, they've once again made it clear that noone can rival them there.
It sounds fantastic. Even though I only heard the cassette, this f

Even though I only heard the cassette, this fact is quite obvious.
I can't wait for the CD. They've created a dark, moody and melodic album, with more density and attention to detail than Confield.
It's just stunning so I don't have much choice but to give this a 10 out of 10.

Sorry roy, and everyone else. I haven't been online in two months until 2 days ago cause of our crappy school and it's non existing internet connection.
So when I came home I immediately downloaded the album and got all excited.
I can see the draft wave passed sometime ago though.

i don't see it as just another confield really. It's more of a mix of all their albums. I dunno what other new direction they could've taken. Maybe this is just that, a draft of their album after this one. :P
i dunno, they said in an interview that they're all about sounds and what they wanna make then and there, and they make it for themselves.
maybe they found out this is the kind of music they like.

Here is a v lowres (but still huge! at 200k, in order to be readable) scan of the inside of the cassette inlay with the mystery code. It don't make no sense to me though I've not studied it in any great detail, due to being not arsed.
Of course, no-one will be interested and I'll have wasted the 2 minutes it took to do all this. Boo hoo, *cries* etc.

I read it as pretty random code; at least it's not something a human would write that way...probably just a TDR/graphic design device rather than anything runnable...
Unsure about the actual language used; all sorts of mentions of midi/sequencer terms in there so possibly one of those Audio control languages...
But yeah, it's probably just random code...

well hobbes, i find it hard to describe some of the sounds they use..
it could be a sampled sound, it could be a synth. usually i describe bright sounds as synths though.
