Anyone do em?
I´m into classical Japanese Budo although I practice a less "classical" art called Bujionkan Budo Taijutsu that is made up from 9 Ryu - ranging from 400 to 900 years old. It covers all martial skills from unarmed striking/locking to small arms to battlefield weapons as well as general life skills. For me its the next best thing to dancing but with a rich histrory to study up on too.
Squarepousher is to dance music what Budo Taijutsu is to Martial arts!

I used to do Judo competatively and fence to a high standard. I did Dragon Style Kung Fu for a year (that's the main one my muscles do on reflex- I don't even have to think about it, it just kicks in...) and will return to it in september. There is a club near where I live at the moment, but I like my old club best.

Yeah, Judo is a sport, but I think Jui-Jitsu is a martial art. I don't know enough about aiki-ju-jitsu to comment on that though.
I can relate dancing to it a lot and my formal dancing improved a lot after doing martial arts. The one thing I've started doing is intentionally falling out of synch to the rhythm. It's something you do in kung fu to amke your attacks less predictable. It makes it feel weird moving in time to music. I keep on wanting to speed up, slow down or miss a beat.

judo is a sport cause you can make tournaments and competitions with it. aikido, ju-jitsu etc. are martial arts, cause the technics are too dangerous for competitions. the other thing is that sport - judo has lost the whole thing around. for example, aikido, there you have rules, meditation etc.

ywah.. Tai Chi in general seems to be a popular choice for the mind-body thing. I hope you get a good instrutor and ALWAYS check instructors credentials as much as possible............... there are a lot of low quality people out there as well as the decent, highly trained types. You can´t assume anything.....

Wing Chun Kung Fu... what Bruce started out doing... it cool cos its more about movement and avoidance and energy than it is about power and strength.
Its the home of the famous 1 inch punch!

i hate bruce lee films/fighting style! I love stuff like "Legend if SOng Fai Yuk" and early wire stuff with acrobatics.
Then there is Kurasawa-type viceral Japanese swordsmanship movies and THEN you got "Lone Wolf and Cub" with some serious limb-hacking!

Yaarrrr, no!
Bruce Lee was a great artist I think. And I feel more at home with kung fu practice than I did with Karate. I'm currently looking into Capoeira a bit as well. I saw a nice coreographed fight with Adam Sandler yesterday, in the film Punch drunk love. The film sucked though.

maybe he means that if you want to be able to apply the techniques instinctively, you'd have to practice it intensely for 10 years, in which case it would probably be one of the most effective martial arts around as proven by lots of grimy cage fighting tournaments.
Btw, I love Bruce Lee(his movies were art) and alot of his theories on fighting, no single style is perfect and use only that which is effective and discard the rest. Plus don't forget that he was at the base of bringing martial arts to the west.
Plus I've gained even more respect for his power after watching his training video. My God that guy was powerful. Combined with his incredible speed and technique he was one of the greatest indeed. His biggest flaw, although it works nice in movies, would have been his rage though.

I never pictured him as full of rage. I see someone working with speed, power and deception. One of my skills is that I have a quick sense for reaction. We use to play games at our training and no-one has better reaction skills than me, that's good. ::]
Karate is also like that, you have to train for a long time before it's useful. With JKD it's the opposite, sparring is introduced earlier in the training and we have weapons training which is good. It's not a flowery style, it is more efficient than good-looking.
