arrggggh, just bought Massive Attack "100th Window"and it's
copy protected.
when inserted in the pc cd reader a stupid player similar to
winamp pops up and play the CD. fine? no. i want to use
winamp, cause the player sometimes skips when my pc is doing
something else, winamp does not. what do u guys use to rip a
copy protected cd?

You can rip it using analog mode, from an external CD-player
or your soundcards out to your soundcards in port.

That is why copy protection never will work. If you can hear
the CD, you can rip it.

it was wierd on mine... after i got the cddb info, the disc
disapeared from the computer.
i just ejected it and put it back, and ripped it good.

mmmm. i just grabbed the first track with audiograbber.

what does that "copy control" sticker is actually supposed
to do? introduce noise on the digital -ripped file??? i'm
listening to the ripped "future proof" and i'm hearing it
clear and loud.

maybe the other tracks will be fucked up.

infact it scared me, for about 5 minutes, but after roy

now i'm encoding the whole thing to OGG files.

thanks for the support guys.

l'inglese!

really?
i never heard the whole thing - but i wasnt very impressed.
not sure why but i've felt that massive attack have lost
that vitality that first drew me to their music.

maybe i'll have to get hold of a copy of 100th window &
concentrate when i listen to it..?

What is it with people and MP3s?... Why listen to a degraded
MP3 file on shitty PC speakers when you can just listen to
the real CD on a real CD player?

well - i cant speak for everyone.. but i use mp3s for
practicality.
still buy all my music on cd. osmetimes vinyl. but i dont
want to be dragging my albums to & fro with me.
itll damage the cds & their cases. so i rip all the best
stuff, archive it on cds & then i can pick & choose what to
fill the harddrive of my laptop with when im away from home.

well, lot of people were unimpressed with it, but it was
definitely one of my favourite albums last year. i liked it
even more as mezzanine (and this one is brilliant), it's
better as a whole, there's only one song that i can't get
into, everything else is pretty much top notch.

but i suggest you get the mp3's first and see for you self.
as i said, i got this feeling that there are more of those
people who didn't like it to those who did.

Yeah that makes sense acrid milk hall, its just that it
seems a lot of people who don't even listen to thier music
outside of home put it on their pc for the hell of it.

By the way, how do you make a follow up?

thanks for your analysis.
i did like mezzanine - but found it less versatile than the
1st two lps.
it had an overall tone/emotion - not the kind of record you
can stick on when youre in any kind of mood & interpret
differently every time. (in my opinion anyway)

what i head of 100th window sounded even more in that mould.
their music seemed to lose a certain quality that i cant
quite define as mushroom became less & less involved & then
finally left.

hmm, if you like protection and blue lines, and you liked
mezzanine less, you sure will like 100th window even less
:)

i loved some tunes from both, protection and bluse lines,
but i perefer their newer stuff. you should check it anyway
tho, sidnead is really awesome.

im sure a friend of mine will have a copy i can listen to.
but youre probably right about why i liked it less.
to be honest - i rarely listen to either blue lines or
protection these days. but i have had them a while +
occasionally i get a real taste for them again.

100th window is almost a 3d solo record, and i'm one of the

read a book by phil johnson a few years ago about the
"bristol sound".. quite a lot of it is dedicated to massive
(obviously)
3d was always a lyricist first & foremost. something he did
very well on the 1st couple of Lps.. but i find his
producing style a bit overbearing.. lacking in subtlety &
refinement.
just strikes me as a bit obvious. which is a shame. because
when mushroom left & massive decided to take a new direction
i was pretty keen on hearing how they would sound without
his heavy hiphop influence.
grant marshal was always a dub man & that could have played
off well against 3ds punk roots.
but i find some of what ive heard treads dangerously close
to dirge. it seemed a bit over-heavy for the sake of it.
theres a way of using rough sounds & distorted guitars etc
to good effect.

but - i'll def check out 100th window again & see what i
think a year or so on.

in my opinion, when i heard 3ds remix of unkles rabbit in
your headlights, it didnt bode too well for his approach to
production.
he's produced some good grafitti tho, in his youth

well, apperantly 3d is the most handy in studio, he knows
what he wants to produce and how to do it - according to
daddy g anyway. i'd be happy just to hear daddy g do more
vocals :)
i saw them live last year and his voice is even more
impressive live then on records.

saw them live on the mezzanine tour 1998, about a month
before mushroom left. they were really good. just a shame
that th venue was a huge arena. guess thats the downside of
seeing a popular act live - you lose the intimacy of small
gigs.

1. i only have two portable cd players and i'm not sure they
could play it without problems...

2. i definitely don't want to pay money for something which
has voluntary bugs on it, and those bugs having been
put because of the fucking RIAA, to prevent me from
doing what i want with it!! - i know that only one person
boycotting it will make as much difference as an acarian's
wee wee in a giant swimming pool, but... questione di
principio

seriously, doesn't anyone remember when they first started
cpoy-protecting cds... there was a very simple solution,
like you hold down a single key right as you start or
something...

100th window sounded meh... mezzanine was the shit, please
come back, daddy g

daddy g hasnt left.
it was mushroom who quit.
taking with him (what i felt) was the elements that helped
give massive such a special sound.

i wouldnt go so far as to say mezanine is shit.. it must
have been years since i listened to it though : partly
because it is such a sombre record - i have to REALLY be in
the mood to listen to it from beginning to end. where
bluelines&protection are a more versatile listening
experience.

wasn't mushroom supposed to releases something a while ago?
i was really looking forward to that, but then all i got to
hear is that he was mostly djing, and then that silly thing
he did and appearntly went to jail for...
but yeah, he definitely added lot of hip hop to their music,
shame he left.

deadeight - it's just a little weird you dislike 100th
window and think of mezzanine that much, both albums are
quite different, that's true, but some tunes are very mucg
alike.

what kind of stuff was he playing at that gig?

hahaha - a fork..

i reckon a spoon would have been funnier..

he played loads of oldschool hiphop mainly. a bit of dub.
generally more upbeat than massive attack's music. the kind
of records that they sampled on blue lines/protection.
he was on for a lot longer than anticipated i think - though
i felt a bit sorry for him.. as nearly all the arenas
emptied out in the evening for the england v germany
football match that was on that day (largest collection of
people watching the match anywhere in europe apparently) -
huge screen in the middle of a field. so most people kind of
ignored the music for 90mins.
james lavelle was on after mushroom i think. mushroom had
had to play a bit longer than anticipated because the
traffic around the site was so bad, lavelle had had to get
out of his car & walk for 2hours to get there with all his
records.

after lavelle, coldcut were on doing a decks & laptop set.

then goldie (who seemed very happy england had won the
football) & grooverider to finish until 6am.

mushrooms set was a good way to warm up the evening though.
