Here's the scoop: Some people hate WinMX because the client looks pretty old-fashioned. But it does the trick once you can get past the looks. The WinMX network has probably about a million users and a lot of content. Be prepared for queueing - that seems to be the largest problem on the network right now. WinMX has a second "mode" where it allows you to connect to OpenNap servers. There are about a hundred or so of these public servers, most are solitary but a few are grouped into networks. They are totally separate from the WinMX network. Some of these servers are very busy and hard to log into, but have terrific content. These people remember Napster and are true file sharers. There are also private OpenNap servers which aren't advertised on www.napigator.com. Mine is one of these. Most of these servers require a login and password. The reason my server is private is mostly to keep the "bad guys" out so people can share without feeling paranoid. Also many people on the server dedicate bandwidth specifically to it so you're much less likely to get into a queue there. If you do, a quick message to them usually gets you right in. This server is not meant to replace Soulseek or any other public p2p program - rather to run alongside it. If this sounds good to you, just for a login and password. |

Also, if you want to see some sort of idea of what the server is like, I took a screen shot of my computer when I was chatting there. This isn't WinMX - this is the lopster client running under the Solaris OS, which you can also use to connect if you're on some sort of Unix system. |
