Massive Attack - 100th Window

OK, this album is out today so I wandered off to Asda this
morning and bought it.

Verdict after one listen: disappointing. This is definitely
the worst Massive Attack album so far. It can be divided
into three:

3 really good tracks: Future Proof, Small Time Shot Away,
Antistar. These tracks are as good as anything on
Mezzanine.

3 indifferent tracks: Everywhen, Butterfly Caught and Name
Taken are instantly forgettable B-side material.

3 Sinead O'Connor tracks: never much hope for these seeing
as I never really liked O'Connor, but I don't think anyone
could have rescued such banal tracks as What Your Soul
Sings, Special Cases and A Prayer For England.

The album is an evolution of Mezzanine as opposed to a
throwback to Blue Lines and Protection and production is as
assured and slick as you would expect from Robert Del Naja,
no problems there. It's just that 6 of these 9 tracks are
just bottom line uninteresting and that's something I would
never thought I would say about Massive Attack.

One other thing, Horace Andy doesn't fit well into this
album at all. Daddy G would have been much better...

i like it more than mezzanine

those 2 can't be compared to blue lines and protection
imo...

its a shame daddy g didnt do any vocals on this one
(actually he didnt have anything to do with this one hehe)

but then it grew on me really fast

That's an odd statement.

I think this album is cold, repetative and lacking of
power.

Mezzanine was by far an incredible album when compared to
the new one.

... I really miss the element of Daddy G as well.

"I think this album is cold, repetative and lacking of
power." this from someone who loves glitch music so much he
named himself gl1tch?!

but, i shall say no more, as i've waited till the album was
out before hearing anything. should arrive in the mail
sometime this week.

i dont think glitch is cold, repetitive and lacking of power

mayve cold... but in a good way, and only in certain cases

but yeah im looking forward to this album!

Just because it's glitch, doesn't mean it's cold or repetive
titsworth.

I just think this album is not the kind of "vibe" that I've
come to expect from massive attack.

I'm not saying they shouldn't explore their boundries. But
it's just not rweally their kind of sound on this album.

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2003-02-10 15:42 [#00549802]
Points: 14550 Status: Lurker

that's cool. from what i read i have to agree that it's
certainly a departure from the massive attack i know.

daddy g is supposed to record w/ 3d for the next album, due
in less than a year, so you might like that one better. he's
also supposed to tour behind the current album.

Normally I wouldn't, but 100th Window is jarringly off form
for Massive Attack.

OK, i've given this another listen and it still hasn't
improved for me. It's not sticking in my head at all, even
though there's a few tracks I like I can't remember what any
of them sound like. Instantly forgettable :(

I can bearly find the typical MA feeling I had with the
previous 3 albums.
I doens't suck me into it, like Angel did opening Mezzanine,
It sounds shallow, cold, cynical. Having a look at
http://www.100thwindow.com/ doesn't cheer you up either.
My conclusion: MA have went just one step to far in their
own world where we get the soundtrack from. It has made them
cynical...

Well why didn't you say so? ;)

100th Window is closer to Mezzanine than Protection or Blue
Lines. Personally, I would recommend Protection first
though.

I downloaded it a few weeks ago,and I agree,I don`t think it
is as good as mezzanine (no where near),it doesn`t contain
any stand out tracks (I do like future proof),it just hasn`t
grabed me yet.Admitidly,i havn`t listened to all the tracks
all the way through yet,and it may grow on me,but it seems
to be their weakest album........unfortunately:(

"Beat" Takeshi (danbrusca),does the cd contain the bonus
track "I against I" feat. mos def (which I downloaded, and is
a great track......hopefully on the album)?

happy birthday patrik

i read the most stupid review of the album today (in one of
our newspapers)

he wrote that with its claustrofobical mood this album can
irrotate even the most tolerant listeners. ??????

its funny because i thought mezzanine is far more heavy to
listen to (not all tracks tho)

anyway, i love 100th window, it is my favourite MA album as
a whole...

Yeh, it´s pretty lame this new one, innit?
What the fuck happened to the melodies from the first two
albums that changed my view on what good music could be.
And I need Daddy G. The coolest voice. Ever.
And the Akufen remix of Special Cases ain´t even good.
Maybe it´s because it´s just a really lame track. The
lyrics and the melody don´t go well together and even if
they did the melody would still suck. As would the lyrics..
