so, um ok... i sent warp 2 emails over the course of 1
month asking about the existance of the group plone. i have
gotten 0 response. so hopefully someone on here can fulfill
my querry. i thought 'for beginner piano' was an AWESOME
album! so where'd they go? are they no more? are they in
different groups? solo artists? any information anyone has
would be GREATLY appreciated... prehaps joyrex or phob have
heard something?

Allegedly one of the members died, and they sent a demo of
their new album to warp, but warp didnt like it, so they
signed beans and got rid of plone. Mike from µ heard the
demo, maybe he can tell us what its like?

They have solo projects going on yes, but I forgot the
frigin names... :(

I will look around and see if I cant find out more info..

it's kind of depressing, when you think about how
contrastingly beautiful and happy and childlike their music
is.

Plone was discussed a few months ago on the Mu phorum..

"'I know Plone (well OK I play football occasionally with
one of them) and can tell you that they wrote and delivered
their second lp to Warp. Since the death of Rob Mitchell,
Warp have gone "back to basics" and found the Plone second
lp "too whimsical" and dropped them. Rumour is they would
have dropped Broadcast too for similar reasons given half a
chance but have spent too much on them to cut their losses.
Plone I believe are pretty bummed about it and have shelved
the lp indefinitely/permanently and are label-less
currently. Mike in Mono (aka Mike Johnston) has released a
solo 7" on Brummie label "Half Eaten" that's well worth
checking out, but if you're waiting for their second lp and
you're not a label owner, you could be waiting some
time."

Mike P. did indeed hear the demo and had this to say:

"I like some of the new plone album, but not enough - it
really was a bit 70s tales of the unexpected for me. Half
the tracks are to my taste, but I figure they'd want someone
who liked all of them."

"too whimsical"? MAN, thats what i really loved about the
first album.... it sounds like the soundtrack to a rugrats
movie! hahaha

Shitfuck hatefuck deathfuck! Too whimsical? Plone is all
about whimsy!

I'm especially hot to hear it after that "70s tales of the
unexpected" comment. The best stuff on Beginner Piano had a
70s TV theme feel to it.

What the fuck does "back to basics" mean - predictable
formula? Fuck that shitfucked fuckshit.

yeah, warp has me a little pissed. if its not autechre or
hip hop, they dont wanna even bother with it. COME ON! what
about plone? what about chris clark? what about all the tons
of UNSIGNED artists who are 10 times better than nightmares
on wax or beans?

I've never seen that show.

It just occurred to me that if I put my avatar sideways over
a flame he'd look like he was turning on a spit.

Should I put a spike thru him vertically? It would be like
hampster gyros meat.

I think you should watch it. I love Hamtaro. I love
hamsters. I have pet hamsters named after hamsters on the
hamtaro show. It's a good show for people who like hamster
or have hamsters. I'd dare say it's "ham-tiki-tastic!" :D

i never thought plone really fit on the warp roster, their
sound is too different. but that doesnt mean it's no good,
dont get me wrong.

no, what i said was i think that warp spends too much time
on groups like nightmares on wax and prefuse and all that,
instead of really good under-rated artists like chris clark,
max tundra (man they effed that up), and plone.

there's the plock ep, which was that track with two nonlp
bsides, and on wurlitzer jukebox a 7" with "press a key"
from the album and a nonlp bside called "electronic beauty
parlor."

although i thought the album had too many weak tracks (or
rather, ennio-morricone-esque tracks, the flavor of which i
don't like), i love their unique, playful sound, especially
tracks like "plock." i can't believe there isn't another
label that would put out their new record. of course, i
wonder how much of a part rob mitchell played in their
signature sound.

what the hell is "too whimsical"
Is there a line or level of whimsy that is too much for warp
records? if so how do you measure whimsy?

Warp records: your album is too whimsical.

Plone: ahh, well we actually turned down the whimsy a
little from the original level.

Warp records: well it's still too whimsical, perhaps you
could take the whimsey down a bit more and make it more
strategic.

Plone: but strategy is not our bag. our music is more of a
tribute to caprice.

Warp Records: capriciousness just doesn't sell. these
techno dorks can not stand arbitrarity.

Plone: That's not even a word. we're out of here.

Warp Records: where are you going?

Plone: oh. somewhere, anywhere we'll see i guess.. it
doesn't really matter. here, there, its all good.

I picked up "for beginner piano" the other day and I love
it. It's a little reminiscent of Melodies from Mars.

rob mitchell was one of the warp founders, not member of
plone. he had more eclectic approach than steve beckett.
plone played recently live...i saw pictures on the net
somewhere....i really like the album, and these are the sad
news for me....i recommend that mike in mono ep , so kool

being the big guys when it comes to idm labels should
realize that there is better stuff out there than plone and
two lone swordsman!

oops, i connected the "allegedly one of the members died"
with the "since rob mitchell died" and not being familiar
with the names mistakenly assumed that rob mitchell was the
member who "allegedly died."

better is always relative, but if by "better," mimi, you
meant "more marketable," then i'd have to agree.

pfft... i think warp should get their head out of their
arses and stop beating squarepusher, twin and ae into our
minds as the musical messiahs. there ARE other groups JUST
as good. well, maybe not as good as ae, but definitely just
as good as 'pusher or boc.

ehh i don't really mean more marketable since people give
warp a lot of trust when it comes to these things. warp
really has the opportunity to put things into the spotlight.
i just with they would up the quality of their selections.
just my opinion however.

>>How DID he die?

The big C i believe

About a year ago i had to visit a house in my home town of
Birmingham to dj on an internet radio station. As me and my
mate walked down the road towards the house, my friend
mentioned that the last time he walked this street someone
asked if he was a member of plone. Weird!

Anyway we arrived at the house and knocked on the door. Who
should answer the door - a member of plone!

anyway...

Plone were also very good live - saw them a few times. Im
not too sure what they are doing now though
