can someone explain to me what 'acid' refers to when
defining a musical genre.. and some examples of those who
create it

acid refers to techno made with the roland 303 'bassline'
drum machine. the drum machine has a synthesized
programmable 'bassline' thats parameters can be adjusted in
real time.

when it was released, it was intended to act as a backup
band for folk using drum machines because that had no
musical friends. the 'bassline' sound was rather rediculous
sounding and in fact, sounded NOTHING like a bass guitar.

years later, techno pioneers found these machines available
rather cheaply in thriftstores and the like, and found that
by through a little knob twiddling, beautiful sounds could
come out of this little piece of previous obsolesence...
these sounds became known as 'acid' sounds. from all i know
the name 'acid' came from that marshall jefferson track
'acid tracks'.. probably named because people eating acid in
warehouse parties really loved the sound of the 303 (just
guessing there).

so to answer your question, acid techno/house/whatever is
any music made with the 303 bassline being a primary
element.

check out aphex's UI series for the most pure/beautiful
examples of acid.

hope this helps..

1) I desrve props for giving you that info, especially since
im at work and this is virtually the busiest day out of the
entire ear at my office.

2) I can't believe no one else responded to this. For shame
xltronic crew, for shame.. I guess no one cares about their
roots these days.

3) sorry for all the typos and grammatical errors. I'm sure
you get the idea though.

303s are great ;)
Anyone else ever sample jar lids being depressed rapidly?
I've gotten great tb-303 like sounds out of a large prego
spaghetti sauce jar. Just a tip for the poor like me! :)

303s weren't the orignal Acid...

it comes from the term "Acid Burn" meaning, IIRC, sampling
other tracks etc....slang term in chicago house circles...

My memory is shit but that's close....it existed before
"Acid Trax" anyway...

I should add that the true "ACID" sound of the 303 comes
from when it's batteries are on the way out....

The filters work very differently...plus it used to fuck the
memory up leading to very odd shit.....
