I just got PI and Requiem for a Dream both for 18$. Came in
a two pack and just watched both. I have to say I thought
they were both amazing, did this guy make any other movies?

too bad he won't get to direct the next batman movie like he
was supposed to. clint mansell was supposed to score that
joint too. anyone know what he's doing instead?

doing/done let me know.

friend and I got a chance to meet him at the premiere of
Requiem. He and the producer were there answering questions
and stuff, it was awesome.

btw: some guy in the crowd asked this question "So how hard
was it shooting with digital cameras"

and Darren goes, "uh, we used film"

that guy must have felt really not awesome.

He did some cheapass thing called Protozoa about 10 years
ago and probably doesn't exist anywhere commercially
available.

Most recently he wrote Below. Other than that, nothing.

i loved pi as well as requiem, although its not a movie one
should go around saying they "love" he adressed some harsh
issues and really did a good job in how he did it, the
actors, scenery, filming techniques are all great its just
the sad reality of how the story told was of a horrible
subject matter

Pi is amazing. The scene on the beach is amazingly powerful.
Gotta love the Spacetime Continuum song underneath.

he was going to do something called the fountain (I think)
with brad pitt and ellen burstyn (again)..that might've been
scrapped though. he has a project coming out either this or
next year for which he wrote thescreenplay (search imdb for
this).. I believe Protazoa was a harvard student film.. it
might've been a postgraduate work, I dont know though

genius is a bad word to throw around i think

its all style

i dont go around calling sean+rob geniuses but they have
fucking style and talent

I do use the word pretty losely, but the word genius can
also be an opinion. People's idea's of "genius" can differ.

They're excellent movies. Not the best ever made, but quite
good nonetheless. Those are the only two feature films he's
done.

overrated, the director and his films. but not neccessarily
bad.

Someone name a director who IS a genius so we'll have a
benchmark.

Kubrick?

kubrick.

offline theo himself from +- on 2003-02-02 19:52 [#00538265]
Points: 3348 Status: Regular

okay kubrick I see that.. for the sake of setting a
benchmark for other directors I'd have to include scorsese
because the sample population size is now smaller.

you know what? in order to really open up this conversation,
why dont we substitute "genius" with "brilliant"

this would include, among those mentioned david fincher
(consistantly) woodly allen (in his prime, of course)
hitchcock, david lynch (invariably) spike jonze (he might
fall under the genius category.. really.. either that or
super-brilliant (?)) darren arronofsky. oliver stone, of
course.. not coppola, he just has too many strikes against
him.. there are many many more....

Requien for a Dream and Pi are both amazing! Wow! I found
the latter at Hastings once on dvd for like seven
dollars--and didnt get it! Man, do I regret that!

The Fountain was well into preproduction and all the sound
stages were booked then Brad Pitt pulled out at the last
minute cause they were offering more money to do Troy. So
the production companies didn't want to put money into it
unless Brad Pitt was in it. Brad Pitt said he was worried
that a lot of the main stream audience would not be able to
understand the movie.

I find his films to be pretentious and unwatchable. There's
a "look at me I'm a self important artist" quality to them.

As for young directors, I prefer Todd Solondz - his sense of
humour is just so sick. Enjoyable none the less.

Genius?
Kubrick, Lynch, Hitchcock, Polansky and Orson Wells

welcome to the dollhouse was mediocre, happiness was above
average, but storytelling was a work of art.

Happiness was fun. He made good use of Ben Gazzara(sp?).

Two movies that blew me the fuck away were Gummo and Crumb.
So while I can't say that Zwigoff and Korine are geniuses,
those movies were brilliant and showed signs of genius.

crumb only did the movie because zwigoff threatened to kill
himself if he didn't. he slept with a gun under his pillow
every night during the filming.

Gun under whose pillow?

Crumb had the gun because he was afraid of Zwigoff, or
Zwigoff had it because he thought he might pop awake one
night thirsty for some hot lead?

his movies were fucking great

gotta appreciate someones style

If I were Crumb I would have kept something handy under my
pillow too, having to deal with such a psycho.

Did he do the same thing to get Thora Birch and Steve
Buscemi in Ghost World?

Tim Burton is a genius, in my opinion. He's my favorite
filmmaker. Think carefully about all the shots. You don't
have to hear a word of dialogue or even a note of the score
to feel how lonely and out of place Edward is in Edward
Scissorhands--that takes ability. Even scorsese couldn't
get DeNiro's emotions out without dialogue or score--well,
not all of them. :)

LOL yes, and understandably less reluctant to act.

He could have gotten Buscemi to play Crumb. It's a tight
fit.

Pi is good stuff.... For a dream was rather depressing. I
don't like depressing movies but the story was well told and
it made you think.

He's good.

Speaking of the batman stuff didn't the momento guy get
that? I can't think of his name off hand.

christopher nolan? i never heard of him doing batman. i
honestly cant see aronofsky doing batman or ronin or any of
those comics. i doubt aronofsky will have a new film out
until at least end of 2004 most likely 2005.

and i dont see why he hasnt done anything i mean hes only
written pi, he only directed requiem for a dream (it was a
book for those who did not know). and below is a shit
submarine movie that he half wrote probably just for the $
because hes not done much as of late.
