Is this music? Or Bollocks?

Does music have to be perceived through and constructed of
waves in a gas to constitute music? Imagine an alien
civilisation that communicates through sense of smell,
they've developed an art form that uses a complex
combination of smells to convey emotions.. Like music it can
in a sense be notated, their technology allows them to store
and reproduce the pieces... Is this music? Or Bollocks?

music is sound.

no matter what kind.

this would be a whole new art form.

just like painting is different from music

so sound may not necessarily be the only thing that
qualifies music.....as well music

i say MUSIC (although i like the word BULLOCKS =0))

You just blew my mind. But there are some words that are
have aa very limited definition. So they can only be applied
to their defined context. Might have to be a new word.

yes, but soundwaves and molecules that trigger smell, are
two different things...

The whole thing would be lots of people just smelling stuff
and then there'd be somebody who says they do it all wrong.
ideally, he would smell them and then say that they're
nobodies hahahaha

Hmmm... Imagine if it were possible to bypass your auditory
system and feed music straight into your brain, imagine you
were listening to a piece of digitally composed music that
in conception had only been perceived through the
music-brain-link thing, you would be completely bypassing
any need for the music to travel through air.. So maybe you
could experience music with out sound, at least in a
traditional sense.. Hmmm...

"experience music with out sound" ???

Zeus has already closed the topic with his post. Let me
remind You :

"music is sound.

no matter what kind.

this would be a whole new art form.

just like painting is different from music"

- anything else You say after that will be just fantasising

so music in the head is not music?

offline CITY PIGEON on 2005-02-12 10:27 [#01496494]

spose you could say it is an experience once its in the head
rather than music... but experiences can therefore be
translated into music/art/smells..........

after all,
i am city pigeon

how could a human even imagine what an 'art' form would be
like for something that is not human? thats a paradox - i
could see humans evolving music into a full senses
experience though, but again - this is totally a human
experience - so we can imagine it.

I think music can be defined as the product of the human act
of creating or rearanging sound for listening purposes.
