Just something I was thinking about earlier..
The best Aphex stuff is truly amazing, I think everyone here would agree. At his best he is in a different ball park, different game and different stratosphere to most other musicians out there..
But lets be honest a lot of stuff he has put out is not really all that great.. there are a lot of mediocre filler tracks (to avoid an argument I wont say which ones I think are mediocre). But for sure not all his stuff is amazing...
Anyway, thinking about this got me thinking about how he says that he has hundreds of records of unreleased stuff, and doesnt put out his best tunes etc etc..
I reckon the vast majority of what he makes is probably quite average and it is only very occasionaly that the lightening strikes and something really inspired and amazing comes out...
All his bullshit is probably becuase basically he is afraid he wont be able to top what he has done before, and if he really did release loads more stuff, most of us would be sorely dissapointed..
I dont feel strongly about this, just something I been thinkin' about lately.
Anyone have any opinions..?

Maybe he wants to avoid overkill. So as to not jade us in the future. Though I wouldnt mind if he released lots of crap. When he does finally release one of those dope tracks, it wont matter to me how much crap came before it. I do agree that he has made some mediocre records. Universal Indicator Red really didnt stand out as most Afx tracks usually do.

I dont think he is afraid of jading us or whatever - I dont think he really gives a fuck about who listens or not - I think he just doesnt have the tracks..
Like why didnt he release Melodies From Mars or Analogue Bubblebath 5?
Because, basically, they have their moments but fundamentally they are not all that good, and he went through all the motions of making them and getting ready for release, then realised just before release they were not good enough.
I have read interviews where he says he doesnt release his best stuff for fear of being copied. Maybe he just doesnt really have that much great stuff?

I don't believe anything about him having so many extra tracks, just as I didn't believe Trent Reznor when he said he had enough material for a third disc on the fragile. :)
but I think APhex is great--I think a lot of the tracks have different charms. Maybe some are too ambient for your tastes, or maybe they have too many layers and such rapid tempos that it doens't appeal to you? maybe the beats aren't steady enough. who knows? but the point is, there are plenty of great afx songs out there--I'd say I like 92% of his work.
Other proof that he probably doesn't have unreleased stuff: melodies from mars and abb5 weren't released but somehow we all have them. :)

AB5 and Mfm were projects that he haulted during the final stages before releasing it. Im thinking he must have tons of old tapes and mp3 of songs he felt he needed to keep to himself for one reason or another.

that's sounds a little off to me. most people who make electronic music are likely going to have tracks, finished and unfinished, that just don't please and aren't released.

Of course he has unreleased tracks, but I don't think they're the best of his work. Why would he have a 5 year hiatus? because he was making good tracks? and then he releases something like Drukqs (which I like) and says that he has good tracks too but didn't want to put them out?

Maybe hes reserving them for future Rephlex realeses. Why would you put out your best work just for the sould purpose of breaking off a contract.

I just don't think he's sitting on a goldmine of unused tracks. He's definitely got some fantastic tunes stashed away, but i don't think he'd keep them unreleased.

No i believe him. I think he really does have tapes full of brilliant tracks that are unreleased.
I once read an article about warp's 10th anniversary, and one of those warp-people also said so. "He litterally has hundreds of unreleased tapes. And the label will say '3 months in 1998' or something like that. And it's full of brillant tracks trust me! Windowlicker was also just something old that he still had lying around."
Well... i don't know, maybe that guy just wanted to help create a myth. But that's what he said and i believe it... i want to believe it ;-)

I kind of disagree..I think it's a matter of personal taste..one man's filler is another man's gem..and vice versa..I mean so many here consider SAWII to be a work of genius..me I see it as a wholelotta filler with maybe two redeemable tracks.....same goes for Mike and Rich...on the other hand..a lot of people here diss..Classics....Caustic Window..AB3...Ventolins..and that just leaves me dumbfounded

true! I couldn't even name one track that everyone either hates or loves.

The thing with that stuff is I like some mellow stuff; but mostly I like the in your face kinda stuff.
So I can see it from both sides. Some of my favorite aphex tracks are from classics :D

exactly I mean my pick of the tracks from his CDs makes every one go wha?
for example on Windowlicker my favourite track is Equation on Come to Daddy it's Funny Little Man and Bucephelous Bouncing Ball
on RDJA its Peek 824545801 and Yellow Calx..on ICBYD its Ventolin and ICCT Hedral
I mean most of the time I just listen to the albums as one flowing continuing whole and each track is an essential piece of the puzzle..as far as I am concerned..the albums I love..I love..no fillers for me..

its true that somethings are not even average... I mean, compare gak, or bradley´s robot with other things released by other electronic artists in those years...
gak is 1994? compare it with bluff limbo (uziq) or with diversions ep (orbital) or many many other better releases of 1994
I am not saying it is bad... but, in 1996 what is better than RDJ album?? nothing, or at least for me, nothing tops the level of that release (all over the electronic releases of that year that I know)
thats the difference... many things where better than bradley´s robot in that year
get me?

Orbital's 'In-Sides' tops RDJ album IMO. It was also released in 96'.

Yeah, I think he's a bit inconsistent. Some really weak efforts that you don't get with Autechre or Tom or some others... but a nice large amount of really brilliant stuff, too. His worst stuff seems to come out under aliases OTHER than ''Aphex Twin'', which is good...
As for the ''he hasn't released his truly GREAT tracks'', I think that's bullshit, personally. Why any artist would NOT want to release their best stuff is just perplexing... must be either a pisstake or a quote taken out of context, I just can't believe he'd do THAT.
