VSnares earns loads

i was wondering how much small IDM artists much earn (we
all know aphex is a millionaire!). It must be enough for
them to not have to have a day job. I am talking about
people like Global Goon, Vsnares, DMX crew..

but then i found some sales figures on amazon.com: Winter in
the Belly of a snake has already sold 12000 copies, and
thats just from amazon alone and in less than a week!!

if we say he earns £1 from each CD at £13.99, he has
already got £12000!! thats fucking mental!!

couple that with the fact he must get more than £1, + sales
from other shops, + given a few months,

these guys must all be swimming in it!!!!

actually... at second glance.. the 'sales rank' on amazon
cant possibly mean copies sold... can it??

there's no way someone like venetian snares gets a dollar to
every disc sold. then again that depends on the label he's
on. a platnum-selling artist on a label like Epic, for
example, will get as much as 14 points on their next
release. that means they get 14% of what comes back to the
record label after the money goes through the store it's
sold in, the distribution company, the higher-ups at the
label, the manufaturers, publishers, and anyone who helped
out on the album that earns a percentage from the album
sales. that can include proucers, the executive producer,
guest appearences etc.

I would assume an IDM artist is pretty low on the music
industry food-chain. save for those who have done a lot of
remix work, help produce major artist's work, or own their
own labels (and those who were tapped to work w/ huge
artists like u2, madonna during the late-90's electronica
wave- that includes aphex twin, moby especially, underworld
etc) other than that though, I would venture that there are
very few millionare idm artists, and that you could probably
count the ones that are on one hand.

I forgot to mention many artists get paid a nice 4-5 figure
amout to have their music back a commercial or movie, or
movie soundtrack

I've talked with VS on several occasions. He said he can
live on record sales alone, and coupled with performances
etc, he does fine. He has no day job.

Also, the Flashbulb, makes his living from live
performances.

I also remember GG saying that he only writes music for a
living. I dont remember the details though. If my memory
serves me right, he makes music for commericals. (And trust
me, that pays WELL).

here, from aaron funk interview

Can you live of your music or do you have a "proper" job?
Yeah I live of my music. Why does everyone ask me that? Is
my music that absurd that nobody could possibly be buying
it? ;)
(doesn't help much with figures hehe)

music....or try to "Break" into that "market"

Ive already come to terms with the fact that Iill never be
able to live off of IDM. If I do, it would rock... but its
not likely.

And yeah, I want to live comfortablle.

Thats why Im at school so i can havve a real job... ill
release my cds in my own time, for the love of music... not
mobey

feeling

for some reason, that made me think of a little Moby running
around with his hands in the air, kind of hunched over,
speaking with a demon voice, saying "MAKE ME MUSIC"

believe me, if you already had a significant impact on a
genre through a lengthy, well-received discography, you
would take the money offered and forget integrity for the
time-being; especially if u were pusing 40 like he is.

WITBOAS has shipped 900 copies to the states so far. 1300
shipped in Europe. We've pressed 2500. So 12000 is an
unrealistic sort of "Warp Records" type sales figure.

The Amazon sales rank shows exactly that - how the product
ranks alongside other products according to sales, like a
sales chart. It's not how much has been sold.

I doubt any IDM act sells 12000 records a week! :D

There's a track from an upcoming Mu release on
Igloomag.com, by a guy called edIT or something. See the
Iglootrax section. It's not bad (rather DSP OTT!)

Yeah, it's currently 12000 in the Amazon sales chart, quite
a difference!!

Drukqs got to the top 10 in amazon.de or 12 or something.

those figures aren't reliable at all - there aren't any
albums that sel 12 thousand in a week on amzon - don't even
reckon kylie and that sell that much - it on;y takes 20,000
sales or so to get to number one!

there isw every chance v-snares gets a dollar ever album
sold or a little more - the fact is he probably only sell
max 5,000 cd's worldwide

And furthermore...

When did 12,000 pounds become a lot of money? That's like
$26,000 Cdn which ain't that much to live on.

living ..

Gak! Makes me want to buy a second copy, or just send the
guy some money, or actually I guess a better idea is to buy
some of the back catalog.

I really support the idea of donation pages for musicians...
we can harness the collective power of an artist's fanbase,
the people who really care, and become aggregate
Medicis for them.

just buy the music - musicians aren't charity cases + the
records has only been out a week!

go to the label website more - see if they are putting on
shows in your area - go to them - don't download all thier
stuff from soulseek and not buy the cd!
tell your friends about them and if you're a dj play their
records - simple as that - just supprt music you like and
visit the labels website to find out who they are
distributed by - if you can't get it in your local
hmv/smiths or whatever you should order the cd like i did
when i ws a kind growing up in the far reaches of the
country

all of a sudden i dont want to be an IDM artist anymore!!!

if it means living on bread n butter :-( lol

he must get at least 1 dollar per album!!! surely!! i
thought he would have got likve 4 or 5 per record.... where
does all the other money go!!

buy the record after downloading!! thats what i did to
support VSnares. Also my friends dont understand why i pay
for music when i download it free first. I try to explain.
But to no avail

Eh!? I got my copy ages ago. And if they're only pressing
2500 copies... well that sucks ass. Now I'm starting to
understand why he releases so much material.

being on a smaller label makes it possible to make 1 dollar
or more per release sold. there are basically no middle men.
all the production is done in house and the only big
expenses are manufacturing and promotion.

this is why alot of labels can offer a 50% of the profits to
their artists which is a pretty standard deal these days.

just to give you some perspective, kid606 who sells alot of
records of both his own as well as on his label lives in a
house with a few room mates. in that kind of situation
someone in california can live off of thier music because
they are not putting out as much for bills.

if an artist is smart with their releases and smart with
their money, they can live off of the money they make from
records/performing etc.

i have a day job and like my day job. only when my music
makes as much as my day job does will i live off of my
music. and thats a ways off from here.
